Getting mom started

Hello everyone! I recently promised my mom that we would find a way to address her rapidly thinning hair. She is 77 and with recent changes in medications she has lost a significant amount of hair all over her head. Fortunately, we live pretty close to Bainbridge so I am thinking that making an appointment would be the best approach. I want to be as prepared as possible so that I know how to advise her so she is not overwhelmed with choices.

Two dumb questions. Do you remove the hairpiece each day and must she shave her head to have this type of system.

I will be so grateful for your help. She has handled other health problems really well, but she is just devastated by this loss of hair.

    Thank you in advance. Joanne

    Hair lady,

I wish you would share the advice. I think it could be useful to many many of us.

For a woman of your mothers age I imagine that a hair system that has a very light density would be good. Partly so that it will look realistic but also because it may be more comfortable. Also I don't think she will want to deal with taping or glueing the full perimeter. Maybe just tack it in a few places with tape. That will require bangs or a lot of curl to cover the perimeter which will show. I think she will need to get the mono with poly skin perimeter because they are more durable. On the other hand I don't know how much help your Mom has available to her and/or what she would be able to afford. Would she be willing to let a stylist or hair salon help her? On one hand a wig is certainly the easiest but the density on those is usually very heavy and they don't seem to be very comfortable. These hair systems are more comfortable but there are alot of care and maintenance issues and it takes a long time to get one, eight to ten weeks for a full cap hair system. She may be interested in getting a quick solution first, like a wig and then be willing to wait the time it takes for a better hair system.  I wish you both a lot of good luck and great hair days.

Thank you so much for all of your input. I really appreciate your suggestions.

I called my mom's stylist and while she was very sweet, I know she would not be able to help much with this process. If my mom does decide to take the plunge, I think I will try to find someone to help her with maintenance. She has been accustomed to going to the beauty parlor once a week to "get her hair done" and I think some variation of that would be best.

As for affordability - she can afford it, although she may be reluctant to spend that much money on herself (on her kids and grandkids, yes - but not on herself). The other hurdle is shaving her head. I think she is vacillating between keeping what little remains and taking the plunge. I think she fears Dad seeing her without any hair at all - I told her I would give him his orders to leave her alone when she was doing upkeep - he has his own medical devices to maintain and she doesn't barge in on him!

I will keep everyone posted. I had lunch with her this weekend - just the two of us and we talked about this. She was excited, but scared, so we will just go slowly and savor the fact that there are solutions.

As for being a good daughter - this barely makes up for what a pain I was in college - it's amazing she had any hair then! Joanne
