  • Jeff's Hair Wearer Secrets...

Ok guys, I have been wearing hair for 20 years and have seen and tried it all. I am to the point where  my hair is 100% undetectable, and it doesn't cost me a fortune. (and by the way, HairDirect didn't put me up to this post!) It's not easy, but here are my secrets...

    1. All hair companies get hair from the same place - so don't over pay or get sucked into the hype (ie. Hair Club, etc...)
    2. I have found  HairDirect.com to be the best  mix of quality, customer service and price (hey HD.com  -  maybe you should give me a free system or something!).
    3. Get the full lace, high definition hair, get bleached knots, get Remy hair (soft and fine), get human hair.
    4. Order your hair WAY thiner than you think you should. I am 44 yrs old and I order 55 or 60 density. Real hair is THIN! You see scalp! Medium/Light hair looks FAKE!!!!!! Less is more!
    5. Real hair is not one color, so get your main color at 80 or 90% and then add highlights 3 shades lighter for the rest, and maybe 2% grey depending how old you are.
    6. Take your hair off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    7. I use the blue tape (with holes in it) on the lace. (2) 1" curved blue pieces in the front and (2) in the back. This provides plenty of hold for me.  I have oily skin so I take the unit off as often as I can (usually each night and when ever I where a hat). However with this blue tape I can leave it on for 4-5 days if I am on vaction with friends and can't easily remove it.
    8. I keep several of my old units to wear, depending on the occasion: I have "pool hair" to wear in the pool, I have "hat hair" to wear when I wear a ball cap (just in case some dumb kid takes my hat off and runs off, I have hair on!)  I have "bed hair" to wear to bed (in case my kids or their friends see me at night). I even have a "Star Spangled Banner Hair" This is a pretty good looking unit that I will wear under my hat (better than "hat hair") when I go to a game where I know I will have to remove my hat during the Star Spangled Banner - hey, I want it to look good in case anyone is looking! Why do I use these old units? They preserve my best looking units for every day use! My good units lasts for several months! (Sorry HD.com, but I gotta tell the story!)
    9. My hair style is conservatve, short and loosly parted on the side. I don't wear it straight back - more over to the side and down.

This is just stuff that has worked for me. I hope you find it helpful. I wish I had this info when I started out. My first system looked like there was a raccoon on my head. Now you would never know I am wearing a system.

Do you take the tape off the lace evry night or reuse it since it's so sticky?

  • Re: Jeff's Hair Wearer Secrets...

leave the tape on the lace
  • Re: Jeff's Hair Wearer Secrets...

Curious?  Who do you find to do the cut in and blending of your units?

    Thanks

I think from reading this you could really make a lot of guys not want to try wearing a hairpiece.I have also been wearing hair for almost 20 years and I could not imagine the trouble and possible embarrasing moments that would constantly come into play by taking off and swithching from a good rug to a scruffy rug for constantly changing situations. I say find a not to conservative style and have it semi-permenently bonded to your scalp. You can almost forget your hair-loss problems somedays and it will always be with you 24/7. It's worth the extra care and finesse it takes in the process of washing it in the shower.I agree you don't want to much density, but on the the other hand, you don't want to little either. You already have that problem to start with. Some men over 40 and 50 have tons of thick hair and will always have it and it looks perfectly natural on them.Think: Richard Gere / George Clooney / Mick Jagger / Howard Stern

None of these guys are wearing hairpieces, guaranteed ! Just make sure to age adjust your coloring. Add a little grey blend as you get older, but I say ,KEEP IT ON !!!!!

Jeff,  You shared lots of good advice.  I have been wearing a replacement for 19 years and HD is the best I've tried and the least expensive.  I agree that too thick looks terrible, but I don't go too thin either.  I have a little volume and it looks really great.  I don't want to look as if I am starting to go thin.  The Customer Service Techs can definitely advise anyone of the correct density.  Because I am on the Standard Order Discount Program, I keep my hair on all the time and only switch between two pieces at a time ... usually 5 to 7 days for each.  They actually last far longer than I imagined and I when I receive my next shipment of 2, I still have life left in the old ones ... and they still look real good because I know how to take VERY good care of them.  So, I avoid the switching for certain occasions.  I agree with you most on the hype of the other clubs.  I invested so much money with some of the others that I could start a retirement program if I had all the money back.  I can buy 5 HD replacements on the SOP for the price of 1 from HC or similar companies.  And the maintenance, attachments, repairs and haircuts alone from the other companies can require you to mortgage the ranch.  I think we veterans need to share this type of information with the rookies.  I wish I had been told the truth when I was a rookie instead of hearing all of the hype from the salesperson.

I have someone local who sells a competing product. She does any minor adjustments for me.

Good points Albert. I wish I could wear 24/7 but have not solved some of the basic issues...

    Questions:

    1. What kind of units are you wearing and how long do they last?
    2. How do you attatch "semi-permenently" at home and how many days do you wear it before removing?
    3. How do you handle pools and wind?
    4. How do you style it? down? over? back?
    5. Do you have oily skin?
    6. Are you "undetectible" or "semi-undetectable"?

    Thanks

I am wearing lace front units with medium density and I probably average 3 or 4 months of use out of each one. I wear my hair just a little bit on the long side, nothing shorter than an inch and a -half in length including my own hair so everything can be combed and blended in with virtually no trouble. I part in the middle and swept back. I have the H.D. high def lace front and it is usually undetectable as far as I can tell. As far as having the units bonded on, I do have a hair piece stylist do that for me and she charges $35 dollars every 4 to 5 weeks to semi-permanently bond it on as well as a hair cut. Well woth it as you know your coming out looking as good as possible. I am pretty sure everyone could find somebody like that within 20 or 30 miles of them. The Hair Direct headquarters is out in the country for those of you that have not been there. I've been there 2X , I live in Az. As far as wind goes, I don't have a lot of problems as my hair is cut very layered and will pretty much fall in place . I probably would'nt want to stand around for a long period of time in a hurricane force gale, but I not around that kind of weather much. Lastly, swimming IS a sore spot probably every hair-piece wearer has no matter how you attatch it or how you wear it because we all know you CANNOT treat it like normal hair when you get out of the pool, lake, ocean,or whatever. It certainly depends on who you are swimming with and how much you are trying to conceal wearing a hairpiece. Whether it's bonded on or you take it on and off ,you need a lot of finesse when you get out of the water if you don't want to be on the embarrasing end of a lot of jokes. If you have your own pool and no one's around, no problem. But if there's a lot of people around, and a lot of guy's around with REAL great hair, swimming can be a huge problem. I'm not a big swimmer anyway, but I do like to know I have a baseball cap real close by right when I get out. There's a lot of false advertising about the ease of swimming with a hairpiece, but once again,no matter how you put it on your head, if you are trying to CONCEAL the fact that you wear one, swimming is probably one of the hardest one's to deal with. I'm pretty sure if swimming were a  SUPER-SUPER important part of my daily life, and I didn't have my own private pool I could swim in by myself, then I'd just have to give up the hair-piece.Also ,a lot of men don't want wives or girlfriends to ever see them WITHOUT the hair on OR, in a panic laden hair moment. The bottom line : If you wear a hair unit, you can look a lot better than you do bald with relatively liitle fuss, but there are always going to be a few restrictions, and CARE-FREE swimming might be at the top of that list.Good Luck !

  • Re: Jeff's Hair Wearer Secrets...

I believe the most troublesome part of swimming is the chlorine.  If you don't get out of the pool and rinse your hair off with at least clear water , you run the risk of the hair shaft being damaged.  I'm not sure of this, but I've been told that the hair can turn very "rubbery" if the chlorine stays in too long.  The same goes for salt water.  It can damage hair as well.  And ... if the sun starts to bake your hair with chlorine or salt on it, it could be a very bad experience.

When I go on a vacation where I may be on the beach or in a pool area most of the trip, I NEVER wear a lace front.  I always wear a full C-Thru and it can be bonded with Max.  If I put it on the day before I leave, I can get a couple of weeks out of it, even if I spend all day in the water and sun.  I do use a Leave In Conditioner with a Sunscreen, however.  The C-Thru is really thin and it does look natural.  So, getting out of the water is not a problem at all.

  • Re: Jeff's Hair Wearer Secrets...

Good tips Jeff.  I've worn systems since 1982 when I was just 21 years old.  My first system's base was like a blanket...sewn painfully on.  Anyway, I've worn system for about 25 years and in the past 3 years have relied on HD.  They are by far the best in this industry.

    My tips:

    * I don't remove daily...I remove weekly...just to cut down on lace clean-up.

    * Thin density is the key to looking natural

    * Add highlights 10% or so

    * Always have 2 brand-new units on hand for emergencies

    * Use color-correcting shampoo at least 3x per week

*To reduce/eliminate shiny tape in front, blot with your wife's skin-colored make-up brush

*Wear your hair a bit on the messy side-not perfectly combed

*Use tape all around - forget glue

*Try different styles...including various levels of highlights

*Do get human, bleached knots, all-lace systems - they look most natural

*Use about a dime sized bit of styling cream lotion by either Crew (CVS) or Cibou... All other products: Use HDs.

*Use a leave-on conditioner with sunscreen

    *Get the satin pillow cases

    That's about it!

    Hey Chas -

Great Points. Can you answer a few questions for me?

    1. What kind of tape do you use?

    2. Do you put the tape on the unit or on your head?

    3. What color correcting shampoo? HD's?

    4. What leave on conditioner?

    5. How long do your units last?

    Thanks!
