Why are bald men shaving their heads?

  • Why are bald men shaving their heads?

I started going bald a few years back, but tried to hang onto my locks with an ingenious (or what I thought) comb over.

In reality, it sucked and looked a mess.

So I invested in a system and I never looked back. I wear my hair longish, so there is no need to match the hair, although my unit and my real hair or more or less the same colour.

When I ditched the comb over, many people said to me, 'shave your head!'. I did for about two months but it never suited me and to be frank I looked a bit like a gangster. Not the way I  wanted to be portrayed or how I felt inside!

But it seems now, most men just shave their heads. It doesn't suit everyone!  I like hair, I think it rounds my character.

Shaved heads might be all right for some, but I like HAIR!

Simon, That is a great question. I am going through this now. I just ordered my first system and patiently waiting for them to arrive. To be honest I am very nervous about the whole thing. If it doesn’t work out my back up plan is to shave my head. I have struggled with this option for a couple of years now. I have buddy’s that shave their heads and it looks fine, but I just can’t see myself doing that. I think for some people it’s just hard to conceptualize the idea of not having hair. Some people might tell you it’s a self esteem issue, but I don’t think so. I guess you are just normal like everyone else, YOU WANT HAIR.

Well like I said, a shaved head just made me look like a gangster, when in reality I'm a sweet thing!

I'm sure you're the same.  You want to look cool, and hair does it.

I hope your first system is fine. I struggled for a couple of years buying toupees that were ill-fitting and didn't match in with my hair! You could see the proverbial join. It was annoying and very costly. I must have spend thousands of dollars.

So then I was faced with the options, should I go absolutely completely bald (which I hate), or actually opt for a style that didn't require a join. So now I wear my hair longer, and there is no need to worry about that awful join. I usually style it swept back on a parting on the side or in the middle, with my longer hair over my ears.

It looks good, even though I say it myself! It's either hair or bald. I chose hair. LOL.

Keep us informed of when your system arrives. And remember, sometimes longer looks better. It works for me anyway!

     Best of luck.

I think head shaving is the final surrender. It's like saying, 'OK, I'm bald and there's nothing I can do about it because I won't wear a silly toupee'. That's their choice and I have to respect it. What drives me nuts are the guys who have a very thick full head of hair and shave it. I think 'Here I am buying hair and this guy has too much and doesn't want it'.  Ah....who said life was fair?Confused

I think it's also a choice of not wanting to be bothered with wearing hair, not dealing with the expense, and feeling OK without hair. I wish I was OK without hair! It would be a lot easier and cheaper! As a woman though, that's not really an option. My younger brother shaves his head and it looks great. He's lucky enough to have a perfectly shaped head. Big Smile It's just a matter of personal preference, not necessarily giving up.

I wish I could just say "f*ck it" and go to town with the razor...the thought of not having to deal with this, as I have been for well over 10 years, is VERY tempting.  I just cannot bring myself to do it.  I am glad that I never got any surgery as I was contemplating years ago...esp. a scalp reduction as one hack suggested.

I'd love to be able to see what I look like with zero hair, and get a "mulligan" if I look too strange.

My father used to part his hair in the middle. As his hair got thinner and thinner, he found himself counting the number of hairs that would fall to the left and to the right of the part. It was then that he realized how rediculous it all was and made a trip to the barber shop.  He didn't shave it but he got a military style buzz cut that he wore for the rest of his life. He also made a few bucks selling his old combs at a garage sale.

    Simon,

I read your first post and the other posts pertaining to your topic. I also LOVE hair. My brother is only 11 months older than i am and he opted for complete baldness and "called it a day". He actually stated that it was just "easier" for him.

Now in my case, and i like your statement of "I'm a sweet thing" no matter what it means for you, but i like that because the statement is saying to me that i want my own INSIDE personality and image to show on the OUTSIDE. My topical hair HAS to be there along with my sides and back, because i have always loved my mother's full hair of hair (she was part native american, part african descent) just like myself and i never forgot the beauty for women AND men (i must say) with hair.

My own unique personality shows with my character AND my hair style. I love the fact that i can now go back and create my famous "part" and allow my hair grease gel to enhanced my waves and curls, which i have missed since i was losing my topical hair when i was about 35.

Now at 59 (will be 60 in jan 2010) i feel like i'm back in my 30s with my HD24 full lace system and i want to close by saying that i have such a passion about topical hair that i have told my siblings, including my brother (lol), that what ever happens, i want to leave this earth WITH my hair system ON!

If you haven't please check out my HD photos in the HD Photo Gallery and you will see my "part" that i mentioned, also my short HD video. The full video that i created at HD headquarters will be posted in the "photos and videos" section within a couple of weeks or the beginning of November 2009.

Honestly, I was pretty happy just shaving my head for years. The only reason I started wearing is because a friend of mine introduced me to it and I was fascinated by the concept and wanted the ability to change up my style. Shaving for 8 years is pretty much the same as wearing the same hairstyle for that length of time. It's nice to have options!

    Simon,

I want to thank you so much...your remarks are truly appreciated. I never thought in my wildest dreams that i would ever get to this point (now 59 and a half) to be able have someone say those words about my hair system, much less of ever being able to get a system at this point in my life, until i searched google and found HD, unexpectedly!

But more importantly, i want to acknowledge HD Diane, former HD Kathy (my good friend and assigned hair specialist), Bill Sr., and the rest of the entire HD staff, but special "kudos" for Diane, because Diane was the "expert" that measured my scalp, knew what type of hair texture with curls and waves in order to match my natural hair sides and back.

Even though i was still not sure that this will work for me, Diane, Kathy, and Bill Sr., assured me and basically "held my hand" and told me to "hold on", "we can handle" this for you!

On May 15, 2009, and when my HD24 unit was ready for me, Diane again was there for me, with Kathy, and Bill. They shaved, cut, measured, taped, trimmed, and did whatever was needed and my unit was bonded to my scalp for the first time.

That is when i "took over" and styled my unit with my own hair grease that i brought with me (lol), and created the look that you see today in the HD photo gallery. Photo number 10 is my favorite style and it was the first style with my first unit and was the time i created my infamous "part".

Kathy and i went outside of the HD headquarters and took photos of my first unit and i never forgot the moment of joy I had.

I couldn't cry because i was so surprised that HD "did it" for me, that i was in shock, basically.

But i told Bill now HD has received an A+ grade from me, and i can now spread the word of referrals to HD because if i'm satisified with the quality of ANYTHING, and being such a "perfectionist" and with my own "high standards",  and being detailed oriented, Bill and HD were on "trial" in the beginning and they were found "not guilty" because they WON their case, with me!

As of today, i can honestly say that i'm in so much emotional joy about my units and being able to style again, that only those of us who wear hair systems can ever understand where i'm coming from with the feeling of so much satisfaction with my OUTSIDE appearance that now can go with my INSIDE feelings.

Just this morning, i got up, (i sleep on satin pillow cases, and there is nothing wrong with Silk either) and i'm always ready to style my hair now, look forward to it even, and i usually just rinse in the mornings in complete cold filtered shower water and start my routine with leave-in conditioner, Protective Sealer, and finally my hair grease gel preference that allows me to create my current style of enhancing my curls and waves and my part, by using a comb and brush.

I have been more emotional more than i share about this, but my thanks shows in giving back with my experiences on the message board, and also, in helping to create a HD video back on sept 4 2009 (will be out sometime in November 2009) to help in promoting that HD can work with any texture, no matter!

Enough out of me, as i always say! I don't want to write a book tonight! (lol). I don't want Babe "spanking me" on my hand! (lol)

Again, thanks so much Simon, what a statement that i will never forget! It makes me proud and it shows what HD can do for someone like me who didn't have the "faith" that it could be done and look at me now!

    Appreciate it...

Donald, as well as the great hair, after viewing your video, you appear to have a very extrovert personality which also shows in your writing. :)

Gematria12, I'd love to post more pics but I'm dead camera shy!!  That pic is the only good one of me! LOL. But yeah, I agree, the hair looks cool. Thanks for your comments.

    Simon,

You got that right! Between my parents, i'm more like my mother in that category. my father didn't show his feelings (i whiched he would have), my mother did and i recognized that difference, which for the most part, benefits me in more ways than one.

My sharing, talking, listening, and asking questions has alllowed me to grow in areas of my life that if i didn't "open up" to "get it out" or talk about a situation, how would i get the help i need, and then i would not be as open minded and free and generous, as i am.

Even in my personal life, i'm a volunteer, and i mentor to a fellow that i call my younger brother that i never had. My oldest and only brother (4 sisters) doesn't talk or share like i do, but he can "go with a conversation" when you get him started!

I can also go out alone and meet and greet people for the first time ever, (on the beach, in a coffee cafe, at the office) and in up exchanging business cards, etc. But i also know that there are the "introverts" out there and i understand the difference between the two.

But as i said, i sort of "get mine off the top" when it comes to me questioning authority, getting the help i need, making sure i have asked all the questions, and i read tons of information, all to develope and continously to grow and prosper and give back unconditionally.

Finding HD and the questions and comments that i asked in the beginning, believe me, if it wasn't for my way of gathering information, i would not be as far as i am in this business of maintaining my hair systems, today. On my 30th day, i had already started bonding my own unit and with practice, i'm honing in on the do's and don'ts of removal/clean/retape/reattach techniques and constantly seeking out a better way.

I may not have been as shy as my father was, thus this is me and thank you! I obviously got my mother's personality gene! I also know for me that this thing called "life" is all about my own attitude and how i want to accept and be accepted, too. That is also why i "feel" younger than my ripe old age of 59 1/2 (60 in jan 2010). I still can't believe it!!

    Take care,

    -D

I think (unfortunately) most people don't realize how far these systems have come and expect them all to look like a rug.  If we could only get our HD hands one all of those that do! Wink

Quite frankly not everyone looks good with a bald head!  I definitely don't have the facial features for a cropped style, let alone no hair at all.  Add to that a lumpy head (I'm convinced I was dropped a few times as a baby) and I think I'm going to have to be a hair wearer if that problem should ever arise...good thing I know where to go!
