  • Being Honest

    Hi all..

    I am considering joining.

I am starting to bald and do not like what I see.  it is not completely gone, but it will probably be within a few years and it is starting to look bad, I figure if I do something now it won't be detectable.

That said, I have two concerns.

    1. I have hair now, not full thick hair but hair, I am balding in front and thinning all over.
Is there a way to clip on a system without shaving my hair completely off to "try it out" so to speak.
I'd hate to buy something, shave my head and then find out either I don't like it, it doesn't look natural and ultimately not for me.(and be left with a weirdly shaven head)

My second question is even more important (to me)

    2. The look. Is it really undetectable?

Please, please, please.. no one take this the wrong way, I feel for all of you, we are kin for sure.
But in many photos.. many, many,  I can tell that systems are being worn.  With the exception of donaldt, Brian D and the girls, almost every personal photo is obvious. The comments under each photo to me seem a bit dishonest.

Add to that that many of the professional promotional shots (***, ***, ***, *** EDIT: names removed for my lack of sensitivity) are also detectable and 2 of them look VERY fake..

I am sorry.. again, I am not trying to offend and I apologize up front for these comments, but honesty is important to me.

Anyway..I know that I "know" they aren't real up front so that gives me a detectional advantage, I get that, but being honest with myself, I see 3-5 systems a day whether it be on TV or in real life.  Watching a short news clip on Frank Lutz (the pollster) last night and I noticed right away his hair wasn't his own.  The point here isn't to call anyone out or make them feel bad.. I just want to know how undetecable the systems are by the general public.

I see so many people who either have the wrong hairline, or have the sides blended so poorly that it just looks like a squirrel has camped on their head.

I do not want to be that guy.

I see that guy here on HD and a select few of the HD community gives them positive words instead of "hey it's looks like a squirrel, here's how to fix it".  I like the community of HD, its seems nice, but it is a little too nice if you know what I mean.  A system wearer doesn't want to hear empty compliments, he or she wants to know the truth and how to fix it.  Some of the photos that I look at, I cringe  and I want to correct all the "wow, Undetecable" and "awesome hair dude" comments and put what I feel would actually help.

I want short hair.. sort of like torontodave (but with a widows peak instead of a straight across hairline) but I also want to be able to gel it back like I do now (poorly BTW) but I really, really worry about detectability.

Anyway I digress, can a few people relay their experiences with me? (if you are not too mad at me now)

    Q. Has anyone figured it out that you wear a system?

    Q. How confident are you every day?

    Q. Is the front hairline on the HD24 and 03 really undetectable?

    Q. Can YOU see it clearly in the mirror?

    Q. If you said "hey Joe, can you see where my hair system starts" and give Joe 5 seconds, would he see it?

Again, I hope no one takes offense, it is NOT meant to be.
I would want to be told straight out and I think most other people would also.

  • Re: Being Honest

Hey, your questions are valid concerns; however, I disagree that most of the people you can tell they are wearing hair.  You need to remember that you are much more aware and looking for signs that somebody's hair is not real.  The average person on the street is not doing that.  Other hair wearers may suspect somebody is wearing hair but since they wear hair themselves, I doubt they're going to point it out.

There are a few people who yes, it's obvious that they wear hair, sometimes because they have too much density but most hair wearers know what looks good and natural and keep their hair from looking fake.

We are unfortunate in the aspect that we have thin or balding hair; but we are fortunate that these days hair systems are natural looking and can be attached firmly to the head without the fears of years ago that a good wind would blow your hair off.

I have been wearing hair since 1996 and other than a clip showing (I started out with clips and hair weaving because I didn't know anything else was available) I do not believe anyone has ever noticed.  I come from a large family and I can tell you that if any of my siblings knew that I wore hair; believe me, they would be unmerciful in teasing me about it.  None of my siblings has ever noticed.

If you are going to wear hair, be very specific about your specifications, especially density, learn all you can about cleaning, attaching and detaching, and ENJOY your hair.  I see on this forum a few people who seem to worry too much and to me, that takes away alot of the joy of having a nice head of hair.

    Hi JohnD

You do have the option of attaching with clips if you feel like you want to give this a try before shaving. Attaching this way will not give you quite as natural of a look as attaching with tape or liquid adhesive though. So, you will not really get an accurate opinion of how the system will look on you.

I'm confused as to why you don't think alot of the systems look natural? Confused Maybe it is just because you know they are systems? Wink

    Hey,

You know, I was thinking about this one. And I recognise a lot of what you said as valid, I really do. I could spiel on about how good they can look, etc. but I don't think that's going to help you out one bit.

My advice? Ask someone who wears a system for a coffee shop meet-up in a mutually convenient city. I'm sure there are lots of people willing to help you out like that. It might be a few hours travel, but I think it would be the only real way you're going to get what you want out of this.

    Good luck :-)

  • Re: Being Honest

What you are feeling and thinking makes perfect sense! I have never posted on here but was looking for some info and saw your post and it reminded me of myself 3 years ago. My back ground is I grew up in the 80's and we had HAIR! I started to lose my hair during a very stressful time and it just kept disappearing. I WAS THE SAME GUY that said I would rather be bald then look like I have a squirle on my head. I dont want to sound like I have an ego as big as Texas because I don't but I will just say that I am not considered to be unattractive and have always been very social. I say that because as I was losing my hair I was losing my confidence and self esteem and WOW what an effect that had on the way I saw myself. Some ppl can go bald and not care but to me hair was everything. I researched and was soooo scared of everything. Shaving my head was not an Idea I was fond of. I went to Bosley and spent $10,000 on transplants which actually worked but u would have to go back 10 times to get the look they advertise. Who really has that much hair to harvest? Nobody!  After a year of that I couldn't take it anymore. Even though ppl said "oh u look fine! I didn't feel it. So I went to Hair Club and was soooo nervous. I signed up and waited weeks for the system to come in and it was not so great because it was a low quality system. Thats how they get you. They bring u in at a low cost and then its "oh well if u want to look like that it will cost this". I was there 2 yrs and paid $ 500 a month for 8 systems a year. I knew there had to be a cheaper way and I found HD. Never looked back. Same units I was paying 500 a month for 8 I now get for 250 a month for twelve. I will say that two ppl knew I was going the day I had it done! When I saw them later that night, They were honestly blown away and one was ready to go himself the next day. I would recommend this to anyone that feels insecure about their hair loss. I like the others don't agree that the pics look fake or that you can tell. Some yes and even out in public you can see someone and say wow!! Squirrel! right? The guy WE don't want to be!! However you would be amazed how many ppl cross your path everyday that you never notice that have a system. There a major keys to follow to be sucessful.

As previously mentioned, Density is the biggest part of the equation! If u have thin hair on the sides and back and then put a thicker system on your head then... Squirrel. Personally I have a low density and you can actually see my scalp to a degree because it looks natural that way. It doesn't look like it's thinning just looks normal Its not a rug! Though that is how it originally got the name "RUG".  Thick is the enemy!

Color and blending is the next thing! I have no idea how they do it but I am still amazed how well this is done. I have five different color strands and my hair blends perfectly. I do have it cut a little long and go to Supercuts believe it or not to have it cut in and blended after i attach it. I was nervous to go anywhere at first but to my surprise it was nothing new to them.

Taking care of ur system is next. I read a lot of post on here and it boggles my mind how some of the discussions go and how some ppl talk about taking it off everyday and not showering or sleeping with it. I even read a post that someone suggested satin pillow cases to keep their hair from moving in the night. Like you I don't want to offend anyone because everyone has their own experiences and I do have the knowledge of being at Hair Club for two years and learning everything i could hands on.  I don't know if I could have done it alone but that is what this forum ids for. Anyway I am very active, I work construction, i spend a lot of time at the lake. I shower everyday and sometimes twice a day. I sleep in it every night. I take it off every two weeks with of course doing frontal touch ups during that period. It never moves! If it does then in my opinion something is wrong.  You will learn all of that as you go. Everything you need to know or learn is right here. It may be too nice sometimes but everyone is dealing with the same things and its educational and helpful. I will leave it up to a persons family to point out the Squirrel effect. LOL

as far as your questions they are typical one and i would hope that no one is offended by your post cause we have all felt it.

Nobody has ever figured out I wear a system. It took my wife two months of dating before she caught on and she only caught on because I'm a guy with way too much hair products! LOL! If done right ppl should be able to run their fingers through your hair and not detect it. Now if they are feeling around they will but normal fingers through will pass right by.

Confidence is everything! I went three months without hair between Hairclub and HD. I was a different person. Never walked out the door without a hat. Even slept in one a lot. I didn't even want my wife to see me. Some of us are just built that way. To me it's like loseing an arm. I never even think about my hair when I am out. At first you will have the natural paranoid feeling that everyone is looking at you. But done right you're golden.

front hairline is very much undetectable, again if done well and taken care of. The system just melts into the glue and disappears. You just have to go through the sometimes frustrating part of finding that perfect glue for your body chemistry. However, honestly I would never wear my hear gelled back! A lot of ppl do but I would be too paranoid.   My hair style is more like HD016 in the style page. But the High def front you wont have a problem.

I can see it in the mirror if i need to touch it up. Again if done right and kept up. Undetectable. U will always see it because u know. I work and play outside in the wind and elements and I just have to make sure its well done.It is a part of your daily thing. Its not just a slap on and go scenario. it takes work and care.

As far as clips.. I dont know much about them but I personally would never consider it for me because the # 1 important thing to me is undetectability and I don't see how one can obtain that with clips. Thats just my opinion.

Well I don't know Joe lol but it's funny you ask because after all this time i still wonder and one of the ongoing "one liners" in my house that is now a joke is "Hows my hair?" Thats always what I would ask before we went out and my wife would stand in front of me and look to see if it was all good. So unless u pull your hair back and get right up in Joes face, you'll be fine. LOL

U will always feel like u are wearing a system and feel a lil paranoid for a while. Thats natural and I did for the longest time. A lot of my family now knows that I do have a system but after a year I had to convince them and show them before they believed me. some still think its my natural growing hair from going to bosley. The thing that made me feel confident and get past being paranoid is one night I was at a party and standing in the kitchen with some friends and they were talking about losing their hair, (I know exciting stuff right) My friend of probably 8 yrs looked at me and said why cant I just have hair like you, you dog! That was the defining moment. i can't speak for ebveryone but most ppl on here seem like they are on top of whats going on and what works for them. I take good care of it and make sure its good everyday. just like brushing my teeth. Its part of a daily thing. If it starts to life u touch it up. don't get caught up in the 3 to 4 weeks of wear. U need to be prepared to take it off every ten days or so.

If you ar considering it, then do it! U will be thinking about until u do! get the unit that fits your lifestyle and pick the right shape and enjoy. just know that everything comes with a price and it's not always convenient but its worth the effort.

    Hope I helped u out.

I will try to upload some pics for u to judge. U can tell me if you see any squirrels. LMBO!!!

Good luck hope I didn't ramble too much!!

LOL hairguy!! I went all on and on for ya!! I just started typing and then it was a book
  • Re: Being Honest

First of all,  a GREAT post by Confident1.   Very good feedback.

As for me,  I have been wearing for just about one month.  I have removed, cleaned and reattached the unit 3 times and have experimented with different hair products.  I feel in one month's time, I have gotten the hang of things.  I now go out and forget I am even wearing.   I have been around LOTS of people and I have not seen one person stare or look at my hair funny.   My wife says it looks great.  I have been around family and not one has said a wod or has looked at my hair twice.   I was able to make the leap before it was obvious I was losing my hair.  So, people who have never known me  without hair don't suspect a thing.

I agree with some of what you have posted about pics on here that look a bit "off."  I haven't seen any "squirrel" looking pieces on here, expect perhaps one which I feel is a bit too thick for the guys age.

I am very happy that I made the leap.  I used to spend lots and lots of time in the bathroom using concealers.  Not Anymore.  I can wash, dry and style my hair with very little effort.

I hope these comments are helpful to you.

HI, to say they look like wigs is silly..theres no way ..no way at all..they look real..

i dont think you deserve help by anyone if you are saying that to us......you are being a bit harsh

  • Re: Being Honest

It doesn't appear to me that you will ever be happy wearing any kind of hairpiece. My suggestion is that you face the reality of baldness and learn to live with it. Think of the money you'll save on combs.

  • Re: Being Honest

come on guys!!! He is giving his opinion! I am a member and I can honestly say that some of the pics look obvious! If you say different then u are being dishonest. EVERY system can look real but in reality there are a FEW that need some help! He is simply feeling the same justified fears that a lot of us feel. It was not easy for me. I know that much! I agree if he did say it to ur face it would be devastating but if you arent one of the few that need a lil guidence then u need not worry.Other then actually mentioning names I don't see anything wrong with what he said and if you doi then maybe you shouldn't comment at all and just leave it be. You cannot tell me that you can go through these pics and not say that a few look less then desirable. i saw one today and he had three or four comments of ppl saying it looked to thick in the front and the hairlines was down too much.He changed it and now looks great. He never had one negative thing to say and was appreciative for the help. We should tell someone hey its a lil this or that if they need to be told. Not all look great like ppl say.  Now that being said I don't think its all the ones he said but I can name three off the top of my head. I put my pic up as proof that it is a good system! Where is yours? Seriously! This is just the place for someone like him to come and get feed back and give his opinion and voice his fears! This is not a place to be getting all pissed cause someone said something that offended you! He said on a few ocassions that was not his intent. Why are you two sooo sensitive? Chill out and help or don't post! We have all been through the anxiety and he just wants reassurance not ridiculed. Its not personal!! I can only assume that if ur going to get mad and not understand where is is trying to come from then you are still not comfortable under your hair. He didn't word it so good but who cares. If your confident it shouldn't bother you!! We are all here to help each other and give advice to the best of our knowledge. and though it was very funny comment we are not here to help ppl save money on combs! Enough said.

  • Re: Being Honest

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies.

I want to point out that I did say that I might be able to tell easier because I know they are systems.
I get that, no need to keep reminding me. Wink

But it's also true that I can serioulsy spot them a mile away.

Also, again, as I said three times in my original post, my intent isn't to offend anyone, it's to feel more confident in making a lifelong decision that will cost me thousands of dollars.
I want honesty, not a sales speil. That's why I asked the questions here.

This community has great feedback on the forums and while I do feel many are being less than candid when posting comments on the personal photos, their heart is still in the right place. This wasn't a dig at HD or it's members in any way.

    blondie12:

Thank you for sharing your expeience!

    hd-julie:

To me, there are a few that are very obvious, not all of course, but it's the few that cause me to stop and wonder. It worries me more that some are posted as professional "look at these" shots and look like systems and someone from HD says they are undetectable, that to me.. is either a rather overactive enthusiasm for HD or....

In any case, thank you very much for answering the clip question.

    confident1:

Wow, what an awesome post (and follow up thanks for the defense)

  • You should get some kind of award for going beyond the call of duty!

  • That was an amazing in depth reply that answered more than I asked and I offer a heartful thanks.
It was perhaps the most helpful reply I have ever received on a forum of any kind.. and to think you are new here!
I'd love to email you personally some day to share experiences (I have a doosy!)

    jonnyboy:

    >> "i dont think you deserve help by anyone if you are saying that to us......you are being a bit harsh"

I am not even sure how to reply to that, I wasn't aware there was an "us" and I certainly wasn't intentionally offending anyone. Honesty is key. I am sorry you took offense.

jonnyboy, I can't believe that if your system was detectable (I am not saying it is, I don't know you) and it was correctable that you wouldn't want someone to be honest with you and rather have them just lie to you.

    Jeff Lloyd:

    >>"It doesn't appear to me that you will ever be happy wearing any kind of hairpiece."

Without knowing what I was getting into.. I'd tend to agree.
The best thing for anyone to do when dealing with an unknown situation is ask questions.. honestly.

That's what I am doing, the above reply from confident1 and posts from babewithamane and donaldt have almost sold me without talking to anyone at HD. If someone is unsure about a decision that will affect their life probably permanently one shouldn't go into it uninformed.

There needs to be more questions answred here at HD like a user FAQ. Perhaps after I become a customer I can start one with confident1

    Hi, JohnD,

I want to apologize for being a little short with you in my original reply. I was half kidding, anyway, but I was kind of shocked that you found fault with Bill's hair, which I think looks great.  I do agree with you about some of the photos in the gallery. Like you, I'm pretty good at spotting hairpieces a mile away, too. Some of these are noticable because some guys haven't learned that the density and the hairline has to be age-appropriate. Regardless of the quaility, if your hair doesn't go with your face, people will notice. If someone is over 50, adding hair may take 10 years off their appearance, but they shouldn't try for 25. This is why people like BrianD look great.  His hairpiece makes him look like a guy who's starting to lose his hair. Very natural...very believable. If you decide to wear hair, I believe you will look great because you are obviously aware of what looks good and what does not.  The thinner the better.  Good luck.Yes

  • Re: Being Honest

assuming your really looking for honest answers and not just here to stir up emotions , I can tell you I drive a school bus with high school, middle and ele school and even do night time sport athletic pick ups from foot ball, to baseball and so on with both boys and girls and Never Have I had any kid tell me my hair look fake. I am honest though with co'workers and tell them I wear a hair piece wig etc and I've ask them o be dead honest and tell me the truth and when I do confess , I been told  No I didn't know I thought it was real , one co worker even insisted I was teasing her about wearing a hair system.

Some of these pictures you see here are systems just put on new and most hair systems do look puffy the first few weeks and that may be what your seeing when you say you see pictures of peoples hair that are fake, also you knew you were looking at hair pieces so you were looking for  the faults that might give away a hair wearer so it would had been more easy for you to spot a hair peice, I guess my point is people on the street are not looking for wigs so they dont always notice them as you might if your looking for one !

At first you may not like it because all hair pieces have that fluffy look when its brand new ,unless you really go with a low density when new and then those wont last more then 2 months, maybe 3 if your careful.

also I will be honest and say hd sent me 2 hair systems I did not want or like and they both times replaced them free , HD also give you a 30 day money back.  also you wont get a real look without at least attaching a hair system to your head shaved and taped!

Honest answer is you just have to take a chance and hope for the best , and only you can judge how natural you will think it is , Every one could tell you its natural or fake but the only one who can decide if this is right for you, is you !

      Good luck Geeked

  • Re: Being Honest

This is a touchy subject for some it seems. Wearing is not the easiest thing, but it does become a routine after a while and yes when people are aware you wear i am sure it becomes more likely that it might not look 100% real.

I will tell you this much that I have been wearing hair for  over 8 years and no one knows i wear accept my accupunturist and my stylist. No one in my family, no girls i have dated, none of my bestfriends....etc

Trust me my sister, mom and dad would say something to me if it looked fake. Oh and you better believe my friends (who are like those critical guys in the new Budweiser commercial) would 100% say something to me if they had any idea. One of my best friends is super blunt/honest and I know he would say something. The other day one of buddies was talking about how Bruce Willis isnt fooling anybody in his movies with his wig....I thought to myself well i have fooled you for years...these are friends I wakeboard with, go swimming with. Girls i have been intimate with also have had no clue, granted i am not always inclined to have them messing with my hair.

Basically if you think its obvious its because you know people are wearing. I would put any amount of money that you could not tell where my system begins and ends. I have a small piece and I have fooled people who see me everyday so I know if you didn't know i was wearing you would never know either.
