  • Safegrip = didn't grip! Help!

    Hi

I had been using Supertape but didn't like the "bandage look" on my  front hairline.

I used Safegrip for the first time yesterday on my front hairline. Two light coats.

Took shower this morning, used Blue Max Shampoo and cond.

    My front popped up!   Completely.

Now what do I do? Should I take it off and start over, or can I try putting glue on again??

Maybe I should stick with the Supertape, pardon the pun!

    Thanks a bunch!

This usually happens with Safegrip if the shower is warm.   Try sparying some adjust A bond  (99% alchohol) on the glue, let it set up  and press lace back down.    My tip for using Safe grip is that less is more...try one coat next time.  Finally, you are likely to do better with Ultrahold, i.e. longer hold time, but realize none of the glues will give you the extended hold across the front on lace that supertape does.

    Thank you SamIam!

I did the adjust A bond, but I don't think it worked!

I talked with my tech and she said I needed to give it 24 hrs before shampooing.

I will reglue later and see what happens.  If after experimenting with the glues, if they don't work, I will just go back to supertape, or a combination of supertape with glue closer to the hairline.

    Thanks again.

Safegrip is a fantasic product.  You might need to spray your front area with anti-perspirant.  I don't use it but it helps.  You need enough safegrip that the lace has something to grap onto (like JRob stated in another post).  I don't know if I subscribe to the idea that less is more but make sure it dries to a tacky feel.  That is key to a good hold or grip. No water on it afterwards for a while.   Also clean the area (skin) thouroughly before starting.  I use dawn dishwashing liquid and scub several times in the shower before a redo.  Hope this helps.  stick with it.

Goose, What is your preferred method of getting the safegrip off your scalp?

  • Re: Safegrip = didn't grip! Help!

Waiting 24 hours to shower is definitely a great tip! In addition, when you do shower, the lace may lift a bit. However, if you press the lace back down and just let it dry, it usually works great. I use a blow dryer to speed up the process.

I also put a strip of tape just behind where I use the safegrip. That provides extra strength for the glue and it seems to hold much better with the security of the tape behind it.

Let us know how it works!

Not born with hair, but I've got
    the intelligence to find it,
the money to pay for it,
the patience to "stick" it on just right,
the will to make it work,
the confidence to wear it boldly
and the smile to wear under it!

Hi, I use the citrus remover. I remove the unit with this also.  Spray in on your head that is full of old glue.  I let it sit for about 5 minutes and then wipe it off.  I use a small tooth comb to get the glue out of the hair. Repeat this a few times and you'll just about have most of it off.  I use a sponge with light abrasion in the shower with dawn dishwashing soap and scrub the remaining old glue off the dome. I do that (scrub) several times until the scalp is squeaky clean.  I clean the unit with dawn also.  Its good stuff.   It has worked for me so far. I have dry skin.  Real dry skin in the winter.  I might get some extra days of hold out of safe grip glue because of this.  I can't say that I enjoy the de and re part, in fact I'd much rather be doing something else,  but it is part of the deal.  I do this every 2 to 3 weeks even though I could easily go 4 weeks.  The front last about 6-7 days with only the safe grip. Tim ferris has given great tips from time to time.  I was mostly oblivious to this stuff for a long time because I was a HCM stooge.  Later..

Babe is right, 24 hours minimum before washing your hair. If you can stand it, use luke warm or even cold water. Cold water is good for your hair as it closed the cuticles and stops tangling, plus it sets the glue, It also gives a nice shine.

Its worth also pointing out to be really gentle , and dont bush the hairline forward straight out of the shower. Use the towel to press dry the front, then you will find the glue will set and stay fixed.

Also, as much as i hate 'sayings' this one is true, 'failing to prepare is preparing to fail'. You must make sure your scalp is squeaky clean. Any oil or debre  will hinder the glue from sticking.

Thank you all for your help.

My front is pretty much completely lifted now, but I am wearing bangs to conceal that.

Will experiment with the tape plus adhesive as Babe suggested.  I had been doing that before and it  held very well.  I  just get frustrated because of the "bandaid" look.  I see all the guy's and gals photos with the undetectable hairline and would like mine to work that way. Although I place the system behind some of my growing hairline, my growing hair is so  thin you can see right through it.   Would like to go  without bangs but maybe that just won't happen. At least now I have hair!

     Thank you again!

Thanks for al the tips for the safegrip !

I love the "feel" of this method on the scalp. Unlike tape, when I use the glue I feel virtually no "edge" when running fingers through my hair.

I find tape is easier for my weekly maintenance.. but the safegrip definitely feels better.

Yep, I really love safegrip but after some years realize that the water based glues can lose their tack after showering.  I usually let the system dry after showering and the the base sits back down into the glue.  Also, I believe that less is more when applying glue.  I have found that too much glue will get messy (terrible cleanup) and will be very visible on the hairline.  A light thin coat is the way to go for me.  I have never had any luck using acrylic glues (the clear ones), they can get stringy and messy when applying.

    Hi Nellie,

After hearing great reviews,  I also decided to use the Safe Grip.  It does not work for me!  i tried it a few times with different coats and drying times each time. I tried it at the front hairline and the front would lift up after a day withought even wetting my hair.  It was just a big mess to clean up on a daily basis so I'm sticking to tape for now but still want to find a glue that works so I don't have to wear bangs.  I've also tried the HD ultra hold and I find it messy and doesn't hold well on me either.  I'm going to try the walkers glue next.  I want that high def undectible look at the front as well, but will not work with tape. I am still on a mission to find the perfect glue that works with my body chemistry!

  • Re: Safegrip = didn't grip! Help!

    smiley,

I have used both super tape and walker no shine tape on my front, and its been totally undetectable. Maybe its the way you have been cutting the lace, and how much extra you are leaving at the front hairline that isn't allowing you the undeteectable look.

  • Re: Safegrip = didn't grip! Help!

    Hi Tim,

I'm not sure if it was you that suggested leaving some extra lace at the front for the extra realism and hold.  Anyhow, i did see it somewhere on the boards, and I did order my next unit with the extra lace at the front.  I'm hoping this will solve my problems!  I plan to use tape and then a bit of glue for the extra lace.  I'm just worried that the extra bit will peel off my head sooner then expected.  I know I'll be so nervous that I'll keep checking it all the time because it will be easy to spot once it starts peeling off.  I guess I should be optimistic and hope for a strong hold.  I asked for an extra 1/2 inch.  Hopefully it will do the trick!

    IMHO, I think 1/2 " is too much. try for 1/8 ".
