Getting Hair cut-in: by HD or local?

  • Getting Hair cut-in: by HD or local?

I ordered my first unit from HD a couple of months ago and between a mis-communication with the hair tech and my need to get it as quickly as possible, I received it without it having been cut-in.  So, I went to the salon where I had been getting my pieces from and my stylist there cut it in for me--at a cost of $50.  It is my understanding that HD is supposed to have the unit cut to whatever style you want before sending it to you and that that is part of both the cost and the reason HD is supposed to be more convenient than other options.  When I called to re-order for my next unit, I mentioned this to the hair tech and she seemed to hesitate over the whole hair cut issue.  I had previously sent several photos of the cut/style I want with my original order.  At first the tech said she would only need to know what length in inches I would want the bangs across the forehead to be.  When I called for the re-order, she said that if I really wanted HD to do the cut-in, she would need measurements for every section/layer around the entire unit.  It's not that complicated of a style-- long layers all around (longest length 14 inches) with some longish, wispy bangs across the forhead (the pictures I provided for the style are of Heather Locklear's hair).

Is it normal for HD to need such measurements?  Do most ladies have HD cut their units in or do they wait til they get it, put it on,  and then go to someone local?

    Thanks for any input!

    Belle,

    Did you speak with Diane?

    Hi Belle,

The reason your Hair Tech needed exact measurements is because everyone's forehead is different.  Some people have very long foreheads and some have narrow foreheads.  To say wispy bangs may not work if not done at the exact measurement for YOUR forehead.  It is almost impossible without having you right in front of us to tell from a picture how long to make them.

Another reason we sometimes need measurements for women's cuts is because everyone's top-of-head system (full caps are easier) is different.  We can't tell from looking at it how much of your own natural growing hair will be showing in order to get it to blend properly for you.  But by giving us the measurements we need, we can get it cut into the desired style.

Diane does all in-house clients and doesn't take phone calls.  However, even Diane would need specifics before doing a cut in.  All of the Hair Techs do cut in's here.

    I hope this helps.

    Camille,

Wait...are you kidding??? In addition to all that you guys do you ALSO do cut ins??? You guys are just too much! Fabulous! Why did I think that it was only Diane and Bill? Maybe because they were the one's who did my first "cut"!

Thanks for clarifying that, I had no idea!

How many hats do you guys wear anyway? tee hee!!!

HAHA Babe, you crack me up! Yes we do cut ins as well. When things come in or are sent back to us for tweaking they get put in what we call our "tech room" once a day for 2 hours 2 of us go down and work on things in the order they are put down. However there are some clients that prefer a certain tech do things, which is fine too!

Camille is right, depending on the size of your cap, and if you cover your hair wit any of the system some of these measurements can be pretty important. Length of bangs is one of them, we all have different sized foreheads, so even to say "eyebrow length" my eyebrows might be 3" from my hairline and yours might be 4".

    Hi Babe,

You're a riot! Big Smile  Actually, I like doing cuts on the systems.  It was always my favorite thing to do when I worked in a salon and I do miss it alot. Sad

I take it from your response that you do not have yours cut-in before you receive it from HD.  Do you have a regular stylist who cut it for you?  I'm still wondering what most women do.  Thanks!

For my really curly units I have HD trim them and then I angle the sides and cut the bangs myself. For my straighter units I go to a salon who is experienced in cutting systems. I attach it and then they cut it while it is on my head. Curly units are more forgiving. I don't trust myself to cut a straight unit myself, but I know Babe says she does.

    Belle,

Sue's right - I actually cut my own now. I started out with HD cutting them for me, then I wanted a change of style, so I went to a salon to pick one out and had my unit cut. Then, I just watched her cut it and said, "I think I could do that myself..." and so, I did.

I don't usually recommend that people cut their own hair, but if you are like me and have lots of practice and are a doityourselfer then it's likely you'll attempt it no matter what, but the risk of "messing up" a unit is pretty high.

I guess I just never sent my new hairstyle request in to HD - but now you have me wondering why I do it myself! LOL...so, maybe on my next order I'll ask them to cut it for me - that way when it shows up I just need to plop it on instead of cutting it first!

I had my first unit cut in by HD & am did not quite get the look & was striving for. I was looking for a medium length bob I it is not quite full enough in the back or sides.I don't thing it looks like much of a bob cut. A razor was used on my bangs & i don't like them. Is it possible to send it back to be filled in or can anything be done? I think it still looks wiggy? Kinda puffy looking.Confused Maybe my base is too small , i'm not sure what the issue is but I will work with my tech to try to get a more natural look. Your hair looks really natural. My hair length is a little below ear length. I gave my tech a picture of the style I had in mind but it didn't turn out like the picture.

My second unit is being sent back because it was not full enough so I do not have anything at this time to replace my first unit. Hopefully this month when I go back it will be in & I can switch units & try another shot at a cut in. Any advice ? What is your base & specs? My color & base are good, its just not as natural looking as I thought it would be.

Yikes-- I'm not getting put at ease on my worries about HD doing the cut-in.  But at the same time, part of what I expected and wanted from HD versus going to a hair system salon was being able to receive it at home and attach it at home, when it's convenient for me.  Having to pay extra to have someone local cut it in for me, take time off from work to go to a hair stylist, and do my attachment according to a stylist's openings is almost going back to square one.  I work and have 3 kids, so doing the salon thing was requiring me to take a day off work and drive an hour into town (we live kind of in the country).  I was hoping to escape that with getting the hair ready-to-wear in the mail.

     What do the men do?

    Thanks, Belle

    Belle,

I wouldn't be afraid at all. If you work with the hair tech and tell her what you want, she will work very hard to make that style happen for you. I just do mine since it's so easy and I can see it while it's on my head.

I've been cutting people's hair for years...without a license...only family members...so I felt pretty confident doing it myself. That's the only reason I do it.

The ladies at HD all have licenses and have been in the "hair" business for years. Go to the "About" tab at the very top of this page and you can read about all of their experience. Just one less than stellar experience posted shouldn't sway you from a great service and total time saver!

    Good luck,

I'm in no way saying that HD's service is not good.I have been very happy with the service & advice from my tech. It's just that the cut is not quite right yet. I'm sure we will get it right with some adjustments. I'll try to post some pictures so you can see what I'm talking about.

    Hey New2u,

Hope you didn't think I thought that...I totally understand what you meant! Also, I think it is VERY important that if we have any experience that doesn't match our expectations we should ABSOLUTELY write about it.  Why? Well, most importantly to try to get it resolved and secondly, writing about less than stellar experiences teaches everyone who reads these boards that things do go wrong and in no way will every order, cut, unit, etc. be perfect every time.

It's a great story - so I'll tell it here...

When HD asked me if I would be interested in writing a blog on the website, initially I was VERY flattered. I thought about it for quite some time and about the responsibility it represented. After all, I would have a very large, international audience of people who were all looking for the same solution I had searched for and they all needed help. I also felt as though I would be responsible to some degree for the reputation of HD. During our meetings, I brought this topic up and as usual....the staff and management of HD impressed me.

The answer was that "THEY" are responsible for the reputation of HD and that my blog was to be written about my wearing experiences as they happened. In addition, they told me that I was EXPECTED to write about any mistakes or bad experiences I have to help others.

Well, needless to say, I accepted the offer. I'm not paid to "paint a pretty picture" or to embellish any experience I have, it's all absolutely 100% true. If you read back blogs in the archive, you will see that I actually have had to return two orders to HD. One where the knots weren't bleached and they were all lined up in straight rows and the second order that showed up blonde!

I truly don't think I get any special treatment - well, except for when I visit, then they get donuts and great lunches for me! So anyway, just wanted you to know what HD thinks about being upfront and projecting a realistic picture of hairwearing!

    Hope your day is great!
