Hairline Question For The Ladies...

Just curious......I read somewhere that a lot of women prefer a "mature" hairline on men. Not a "balding" look, but a normal amount of natural recession of the hairline.

Since I have switched to a full cap I have been getting my units with less recession, but I am debating about whether or not a little deeper of a contour might look better on me.

I have had partial units in the past with deeper recession and I thought they looked pretty good. But at the same time I think I look young enough to be able to pull off a "full" hairline.

I will be turning 38 at the end of this month, and I think it might be time to change it up a little bit. I suppose I can make subtle changes with each new unit....

Here is the difference between a deep contour with a partial and a "full" hairline with a full cap-

Any thoughts? I'm leaning toward adding more recession, but I would like to get some opinions first.

P.S.- Men are welcome to chime in too....I just know that women are pretty good at giving opinions when it comes to this kind of stuff Big Smile

    Jon,

I find this to be a rather difficult question because I can only speak for myself and not for most women. My opinion tends to be pretty different from most people but here it goes anyway.

First, we can all give you our opinions but what really matters is what you think. It doesn't matter to me if 10 people tell me to style my hair a certain way because if I'm not comfortable with it then it doesn't really matter what they think I should do. I have to feel comfortable with my own hair and in the end, my own opinion matters most to me.

I think that you look really good in both pictures AND you are still pretty young (especially since you are only 4 years older than I am). Big Smile

Although the majority of people will probably suggest a look with deeper recession, I personally like the look of a full hairline. There are mature men that still have natural full hairlines and they look really good.

Here are some looks that I think look really good on guys:

I see pictures of guys sometimes going for this look below with their hair systems. I really don't think it looks good as compared to the previous pictures. Again, this is just my opinion.

So, I hope this is at least a little helpful. Oh....I just saw this article and thought of you. You previously mentioned men using facial hair to distract from the hairline. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/alltherage/2008/07/does-facial-hai.html

I agree, you have to be comfortable with whatever style you wear. One thing I have learned though is that it benefits me to get women's opinions when it comes to style, fashion, etc. I'm actually pretty good with aesthetics since I have a background in several areas of design, but for some reason when it comes to myself I do better getting some female input.

What I might do on my next order is increase the recession slightly. Then again, I just put on an older unit that has very little recession but with a longer cut and it looks really good on me. Bangs seem to work well for my round face.

    Great link, btw.

There is definitely something to the idea that facial hair has the potential to draw the eye away from the hairline and create a different look.

Costner looks good with that style, don't you think?

    Hi Jon-

I can't really tell much of a difference between your two pics except that the first one looks more natural. Maybe that is because you say there is more recession but I can't tell if there is or not. Anyway, I think you look pretty young and it doesn't appear that more recession is necessary yet. However, if I saw you in person I might think differently. I think one of the worst mistakes male hair wearers make is that they don't recede the front sides of their units when their own growing temple areas start to disappear. It's a dead giveaway. But since you are wearing a full cap, you could probably get away with a full hairline forever. Not every man loses hair as he ages. I know lots of guys with full, thick hair who are older than you!Wink

I completely agree with both of the posts above.

I don't think there is a general answer for what women like.  I like a wide range of styles from bald to ponytails.  It really depends on the person.  Everyone can't pull off the same look.  I will say that I'm not fond of the last picture.  It just isn't a style I'd look at and think, wow, that looks great.

That's true too--I think a lot of guys look great with a shaved head, including you Jon! As I've said on this board before, my boyfriend has really long (about 18-20 inches now!), healthy, beautiful dirty blonde hair. I'm so jealous! He's 42 and his hair is fine but super thick. I have 110 density and his hair is way thicker than my unit. He has a little recession in the front but not much.

Actually, I was looking again at the pics that Angie posted, and any of those guys could be wearing hair. Some look overly thick to me!

Hey JROB from a male perspective I like the less recession in the full cap. You can still see some recession but it is more uniform across the front hairline. The full cap just looks better and the hairline is very unifrom. IMO
  • Re: Hailrline Question For The Ladies...

I reposted that picture of the receding hairline. I guess the last link stopped working because it only showed a red X.

    Jon,

I think that bangs look great on you and I would definitely keep them. They just really add to your whole look. If you tried to go without bangs it would almost seem as though something is missing. You do a great job of styling your hair well

Costner does look good with that style but he always looks good to me since I've had a crush on him for years. I think that you have really brought your look together since you decided to grow some facial hair. It looks really good.

Roxrog is right about the style really depending on the person. I also agree with Sue that lots of guys look great with a shaved head. I love the way Patrick Stewart looks and just can't imagine him with hair.

Sue also said that the pictures I posted look like any of those guys could be wearing hair. It's true. They have such thick hair and almost unrealistic hairlines. We spend so much time trying to match what looks natural but even the natural hair can look fake.

I think that what will look best on you is what you feel best in. If you feel good about it then you will show confidence and no one will question it.

Just the other day I had one of those moments where I thought I spotted a really bad piece, and then realized it was the guy's real hair! He was in his 50s with super thick hair and it looked really fake. Then I saw his hair from the back and by the cut I could tell it was real.

I was in my early 30's when I started to wear a piece and when I use to have a paranoid day I would seek comfort from my Mum, her reply was " the only person who knows you wear hair is you, people can't read minds". My wife is a hair stylist and owns her own salon, when I first met her she didn't know, and couldn't tell, she was shocked when I told her, so my Mum was right.

I have discussed this receeding/thinning issue with my wife as I am 43 now and still have a full hair line, her answere is that there are plenty of men out there with their own hair and a strong hair line so why have it thinner or receeding ?

With this advice from her I plan to keep the hair line for now cut down on the overall density.

    Hi JRob,

I like the first picture too.  I agree that not enough recession for a guy is a dead give-away when it comes to wearing hair.  But that's just my opinion.  Wink

    Thanks for the input everyone.

I suppose the main reason that I asked this question is because I am on the fence about it. I think both looks can work. Looks like there isn't much of a consensus Tongue Tied Guess I just need to keep tweaking....

In related news- I have been experimenting lately with some units I have lying around and if all goes well I will be throwing the hair community a real curve ball in the very near future.

    Stay tuned......

I think you look great in both pictures. I personally think the hair system should have some natural "fault". Either a slightly receding hair line, a light density, a sprinkling of grey or something that makes it look less than perfect. It is the perfection that sometimes makes a hair style seem like a wig. Non-wearers for the most part have no idea how custom we (HD) can make them so they expect to see a generic style.
