I am looking for the best regime for health of my hair. Styling routine is to blow dry and use flat iron to smooth. I wash my hair every 3rd day, condition, and add leave-in conditioner twice daily, but what about those off days when I don't wash?
To keep hair in the best shape, is it better to:
1) Rinse hair, condition, apply leave-in, blow dry, flat iron
OR
2) Apply leave-in on dry hair and flat iron
Which dries the hair out faster?
Yes, I know, I shouldn't flat iron but to achieve the style I like, it is the only way to accomplish.
FelineWoman,
I also wash my hair every 3rd day with shampoo, conditioner, and leave in. I think that you might want to experiment a bit. On days off when I don't wash my hair I only rinse and condition in the shower if I exercised that day. Otherwise I'll just apply leave in conditioner. With my old shampoos and conditioners (and I went through several brands) I had to rinse and condition regardless of my exercise routine.
I switched to Biosilk products and my hair is always healthy and conditioned. I think that you might want to try both ways that you mentioned and see which one actually works best for you. Either way.............if you are using a flat iron then be sure you are protecting your hair. I like changing my look quite a bit and sometimes use a flat iron, curling iron, etc. Always be certain that you are using a product to protect your hair.
I personally use the Biosilk Thermal Shield. http://www.biosilk.com/style/thermalshield.html
However, there are several different products on the market similar to this one. I think the secret is finding what works for you. We can all recommend different products to you but you may not like them. People seem to swear by the Nearly Natural line of products. I'm glad that they work for so many people but they do nothing for me. They are sitting under my bathroom sink along with other products that I didn't like.

Hi FW-
I agree with Angie. If you are going to flat iron every day, at least use products that are designed to protect your hair from thermal damage. I know CHI makes several such products. Usually you can just spray on and then use the flat iron.
Because you are flat ironing every day, I suggest you use the flat iron on the lowest setting that works for you. I fried my own growing hair by using the flat iron on a setting that was too high. Your unit's hair is even more susceptible to damage.
Also because you are flat ironing every day, I would suggest you do rinse and condition every day. The flat iron is crushing and drying out the hair so every bit of conditioner will help. If you use over-the-counter products, try stuff that is moisturizing and possibly even try curly hair conditioners because they are designed to be more moisturizing since naturally curly hair is a lot drier than straight hair.
Last, I'm not sure if you do already, but I'd suggest ordering silky straight hair next time so that you don't have to bother with the flat iron as much. Babe says it's "stick" straight. I'm going to try it out on my next unit.
Good luck.

Angie,
In reply to your comment about having products under the sink that you don't like and won't use...We should all do a swap or cheap sell to one another to get rid of those items so that they are not wasted. I too, have a couple of items that I don't care for, but maybe someone else does...just a thought.

Gwen,
I think that's a great idea! I have previously thought that it would be great if HD had 5 forums instead of 4. They could be General Discussion, HD Feedback, Women's Hair Replacement, Local Stylists & Services, and Product Trading.
The Product Trading forum would be a place where we could trade various items purchased for hair that just didn't work out for us but someone else wants. Of course, it would have to be trading at your own risk and not holding HD accountable if things don't quite work out every time.
I tend to hold on to the tapes that didn't work out for me though. Since they are strong double sided tapes they can be used as fashion tape for securing necklines, keeping straps in place, etc.
I had mentioned to HD about doing a Swap Board about a year ago when I was at their facility. I think it's a good idea in theory, however, it might be awkward for HD to provide the opportunity for swapping on here and remain uninvolved if issues arise such as how shipping costs are handled and whether or not people send what they say they are going to send or if they send it at all after they get your money for shipping etc. Know what I mean? I can see where they would not want to get involved.
Gwen, a good idea is to form alliances and friendships with people on this or other boards and contact them outside of the forum. I have several friends that I have traded products with on my own and it works out well. So far we just ship at our own expense when a friend has a need and know they will return the favor when the opportunity comes up.
If there's something you need or want to try, let me know and I'll see if I have a spare
