Hello everyone,
What is your "take" on satin pillow cases. Some swear by them and some don't. I just want to know what is the real benefit, anyway! Are the satin cases really for full cap wearers, maybe? What will satin do to those that still have some of their natural hair on the sides and back, such as myself? I'm in doubt.
I have 2 sets of them myself just because of recommendations from others on this board, but i've notice, especially on both sides of my head where my natural hair is still growing, is thinning for some reason, for the first time, and this has been AFTER i started using satin pillow cases.
i have been sleeping with the satin cases since may 2009, and i'm now having doubts about the purpose of them. Can they just be for those with full caps?
because of my fear of the unknown, I'm back with my cotton cases because suggestions are just that and everyone will not necessarily benefit from suggestions of others, but i'm thinking that satin pillow cases are better for full cap wearers.
Others opinion, please! Thanks

Donald,
I had them at first, then the zippers fell apart and I didn't buy more. My hair is not that long so I really don't have a problem with any kind of tangling.

Donald--
I really don't think the satin would make your hair thin. The whole purpose of the satin is that the hair glides across it as opposed to the hair cuticle getting snagged on the cotton fiber cuticle. Satin also will not absorb the oils in your skin or hair like cotton will therefore making it less likely to dry out. I think your hair is so short that the satin cases are sort of a moot point. I can't imagine that your hair gets very tangled.
Sue
CurlySue,
You are right on target! Even Brian D answered my post, too and because his hair is short, he is thinking the same thing, about the purpose of the satin cases for those of us that have short hair, like me or himself.
Since my hair is only 55% density and my unit is only a topical one and not a full cap, tangling would not be an issue.
But as i'm writing, i'm realizing too, that folks with much more density and length, such as yourself, the satin cases will probably benefit you much more simply because of the amount of density and length.
The satin cases would seem to keep the hair cuticle from getting snagged or tangled, thus the purpose of the cases, it looks like.
As far as my side hair thinning, i'm thinking that the satin cases does not let my hair "breath" while i'm resting or sleeping, simply because satin is not cotton and cotton allows air to flow through and because satin is made as a polyester fiber, at least the ones that i bought from Target, i'm convinced that may be my issue of thinning.
OR, could it be me my age is telling me something since i'm coming up on 60 years old in 5 months (jan 4)! I will monitor the sides to see if my hair is really thinning because of "growing older" or something else.
But at least you and BrianD give me the information i need to hear for now.
As always, thanks CurlySue

Excellent poiint about the length of your own hair and density. I too can relate. In my case, my density is only 55%. In the beginning, i was absorbing all information on the board and from HD and the "must haves" as the basics for maintaining my unit, that i was just buying up everything, in the beginning, that some people on this message board and others at HD were recommending to have for my regiment of products, and the satin pillow cases were one of them, but i don't remember why i needed the cases, quite frankly.
I will ask questions from now on if i get ready to purchase something that i have a douibt about. It makes sense to know why one need a product, simply because the product may not be necessary for my situation, but may be perfect for someone else just because everyone has different needs simply because all of our units are custom-designed and made to our unique measurements and body chemistry, etc.
There are people like myself, for example, that have had itching sensations with certain types of tapes but some folks don't. Right now i'm still having those "tingling sensation" feelings right at the topical area of my scalp.
I have been in touch with others on the board about this and some of us are researching which tapes are medical grade and for sensitive skin, etc.
These sort of situations let me know that everyone will not have these issues but somebody will have another problem with keeping their unit bonded for only 4 hours, for instance, and they are frustrated.
it is so good to read and write on the board in order to get the help one needs and to have others in the same boat, to be able to relate and help each other to solve the problem. I don't want to ever go back to what i used to do with hair fibers and concealers and had to perform that function EVERY morning for over 10 years.
So when i compare and remember those days, the tingling sensation is all i have to deal with, i can tolerate it but still keep looking and seeking out what would finally be the right tape for my personal need and body chemistry makeup.
This is a true "trial and error" experience in which bonding tapes works, simply because one person may have side effects like myself with certain types, like supertape and walker no-shine. i now use NS 5000 PX and the itching has minimized so much that i can honestly say this tingling sensation, i'm working on that with others on the board.
So thank goodness for the board and people like yourself...
I'm still on this learning curve of "is this item necessary for my situation".
Thanks again,
This is one of those things that costs $10 and pays back hundreds.
I ignored the pillowcase thing for the longest time, but since I picked up a pair I will never be without.
I have been traveling a lot lately, and every time I sleep on cotton in a hotel it wicks the moisture out of the hair faster than my satin cases at home.
And that is the main function of a satin pillowcase- to help the hair retain moisture. I'm sure it does also help to reduce tangling, but the moisture retention is the main benefit.

Hi Guys
Just for the record, sleeping on satin pillow cases and/or using satin hair bonnets etc is not just reccomended for hair wearers, but also for those who have their natural hair. The main purpose being, as had been said already, to help retain the moisture of hair. My stylist, when I had my natural hair, always told me to use a satin bonnet or pillow case. I ignored him...but that is not what caused my hair loss. I think the hair in hair systems are much more susceptible to drying.
For me, I noticed the difference in my system as soon as I began using satin pillow cases and like JRob, I take a satin pillow case with me when I travel. In fact....I've even made a satin covering for the head rest in my car and in the winter, I wear a silk or satin scarf over the collar of my winter coat! LOL I guess you can say I am obsessed with keeping the moisture in my system...but it works for me!!!

Here there.
I agree that a silk pillow case is almost as important as the right hair products.
There are 3 main reasons why you should choose a silk pillow case.
Silk is a living, breathing product containing the proteins and amino acids that are identical to those in the skin. silk has the same ph balance, which helps to protect, and maintain moisture levels. Very important to protect your hair (and skin) from drying out
Silk is also good for preventing 'bed head'. Using natural silk pillow cases allows hair to glide across the pillow case without getting caught. Regular cotton pillow cases can get the hair caught and cause breakage or pulling out, especially if you toss and turn a lot while resting. Lastly if you wake up in the morning with a line on your face, silk will stop that from happening as if lets your skin breathe
If you haven't tried silk pillow cases, it might sound a bit weird, i promise you, you will never go back when you see the difference, i very rarely see hair on the pillow now. It also gives you an excuse to pimp up your bed, lol joke
One other tip that i stumbled on a year or two back, the 'net' that your system comes in.... tonight if you are alone, just wear it over your system if you have shortish hair and go to sleep, when you wake up, take it off and look in the mirror, let me know what you think, you will be very surprised!
Happy Weekend all

hi,
i guarantee they work in terms of lack of hairloss..they are great and they keep your face wrinkle free too..so for me its a "win win"
that moisture theory is not true ..its an illogical comment...
i always have 4 pillows one of which is my satin one..
my face looks better cos i always had a sleep line.......that has now gone
JONNY
jonnyboy,
I'm so glad that i submitted this post about the satin pillow case. But now i'm a little bit overwhlemed with opinions. Are you using Satin or Silk. Some swear about silk simply because it is the most "natural" which is quite true, i believe, because satin is of polyester material, at least the satin ones that i have.
So i'm just checking with you and if you know what material is your "satin" pillow cases made of and would you get the "silk" pillow cases? As Tim stated he would recommend Silk.
I just didn't think that silk or satin would be helpful for those of us, like myself, who wears just a partial topical unit. I'm just noticing that since i have been using satin pillows case since may 2009, i''m noticing a "thinning" on the sides of my natural hair and i don't need to worry about the sides of my natural hair!!!
I don't know if it has anything to do with the satin cases NOT allowing my natural hair to breath or not, but i'm just questioning the effectivness of the satin or silk pillow cases.
As Tim stated, the silk pillow cases are of natural material, thus a better quality even though they are more expensive, but who is counting money here, when it comes to my hair!!
Let me know your feelings about all of this...
Kathryn,
Thanks so much for your feedback, too! I also viewed your HD video, it was enjoyable! I will be creating one with Bill and HD sept 4, 2009! i'm looking forward to it, too! View My HD Photo Gallery when you get a chance.
When i first posted my concern about satin or silk pillow cases, i wanted to know if the benefit is really for those that have a full cap systems.
I have a partial of the HD24 full lace for my topical and my natural is still growing on the sides and back. But since i got my first unit in may 2009, i have been using satin pillow cases because of recommendations.
But recently, i have noticed to my surprise that up near the top sides of my head, it looks like my natural hair is thinning for some reason. Now i don't want to think that the satin cases are causing this, but i'm not 100% sure either.
i also used to use Propecia pills (like Rogaine) for the last 10 years or so, on a daily basis to keep the hair that i have, but because i have a partial unit now from HD, it was also recommended that i can stop taking my pills.
now i'm really at a lost because i believe and feel that i may be losing my natural hair on the side since i stopped taking the pills. One of the problems of stopping a hair pill like Propecia, is that you will lose your hair in time.
I'm just pulling at straws but i'm serious enough to share this information to get your comments or opinions, too.
At my tender age of 59 (will be 60 jan 4), i'm not sure if the thinning has something to do with age, the satin cases, or me stop using Propecia.
In closing, i have started back using Propecia because out of pure fear of the unknown! i just don't want my natural sides and back to go now, after i finally found a place like HD for my male pattern baldness on the top of my head, which blends perfectly well with my sides and back natural hair.
Please let me know what your thoughts. i know we are not doctors but i treasure everyone's comments and i use what i can from the information that i get.

Donaldt and timferris,
I have been following this post, because I too, was wondering about the other posts about silk/satin pillowcases and the benefits to your hair whether your own or a hair system.
So, as usual, I set off on my research.....so, timferris knows his stuff!! I searched the internet and all of the websites either selling silk products or discussing silk benefits say the same thing. Excellent benefits for hair and skin...
http://silkperfect.com/silk_benefits.php
Here is a link to a site that yes, sells only silk products, but honestly had the best description I could show everyone as to what I'd read elsewhere. I will definitely be ordering some and will post back after using for a while..
Hope this may help a little bit Donaldt
