Hair replacement systems custom-made anddelivered to your door. 100% guaranteed!
Hi all-
I have thinning hair on top of my head. I have dark hair. I have already done the "shave and bond" route a number of years back and VOWED I would NEVER do that again. (I had Farrell systems and did the shaving/bonding myself, so this isn't a HCM issue.)
Anyhoo- since I don't want to shave- what sort of base should I get so that the hair looks like it's growing out of my scalp, keeping in mind my dark hair will "showing" thru lace (as opposed to scalp).? A couple other companies call them either I-Lace or a "Sandwich". Does HD have an equivalent?
AND- is there ANY way to adhere the system to my head without shaving? Obviously, clips is one choice for the perimeter, but I am curious if there is something I can "bond" over my hair and also, what should I use for the front hairline? My front hairline is very thin, so I will not be placing the system behind it; in fact, probably about 1/8-1/4inch 'below' where my hairline currently is-so I will have a hair free area to bond onto.
thanks in advance for your help :)
Hi, I actually have the same question. I have been shaving and bonding for about a year now and I am thinking about growing my hair back out. However, the clips hurt and I was wondering if there was an alternative. Sassygal--why did you vow never to shave again and did your hair grow back the same thickness or did you lose hair from the bonding process?
Oh and just in case it helps: before I switched to bonding I wore a clip-in over my long hair and it was a realistic polyskin and you could not see my hair underneath.
thanks.
Hi Jean-
My hair grew back just as crappy as before. *sigh* The reason I vowed to NEVER do that again--I hated looking in the mirror looking like Bozo the Clown (when I was sans system). I hated the sticky, decomposing tape.
It would take well over an hour to switch the system. (I had two). It was a very depressing hour and one where I was often brought to tears in frustration. My scalp would hurt; my arms would be sore; I didn't feel liberated-I felt like I was in bondage.
The final "problem"--the systems were SOOOO expensive ($2400/ea) and everytime my husband and I were "intimate", I would be thinking about the $2400 on my head; not fully enjoying myself.
My husband has tried to convince me that my hair "isn't *that* bad" and that I should just stop wearing any sort of hair disguises; I know that I *look* like I am sick and I am in sales, so I can't look unwell. Besides, *I* am insecure about it; bottom line.
Anyway- my bio hair is 14 inches long and I just don't want to shave it-- if there is some other way to attach, (without clips-that hurts too), I would love to hear it. :)
I too, would like to know if there is an alternative. My hair suddenly started coming out 5 years ago. I had 3 open heart surgeries and think this started it. If my hair wasn't so super thick I would probably be bald by now. It comes out massively every day and I am noticing my scalp now. I have checked about hair integration with this salon in Alpharetta Georgia that says they can attach it with a cable and braid. Has anyone had that done? Does it cause the hair loss to get worse? I don't want to shave my head either.
There's a support group on MSN if anyone would like to join; It has helped me alot.

I did finally find my solution and it was to braid and sew the system on.
Whether or not it makes the hair loss worse, I can't say because I have only had the braids about a week and a half and won't be redoing them for at least another month. The only reason I'll be redoing them at that point is that I have another hair system coming that is more to my liking. (They should last up to 3 months)
I shave the very VERY front of my hairline and glue that down using CoolPiece.com's Oil Resistant White Glue. So far, of all the glues I have used, I like it best. Of course, everyone's chemistry is different so what works great for me might not be as effective for you.
Good luck :)
Sassy Gal,
Hi. I was wondering how your system was working out being braided and sewed on. I have diffuse thinning hair all over; and have been considering an integration piece. I have been trying to check into everything because my hair has been coming out alot everyday for the past 5 years. I'm getting thin and I am trying to prepare myself for the next step . I really don't want to shave my hair. I was wondering who you had do the braids and sew in. I can't find anyone in my area (southeast Georgia). Everyone I talk to only does the shave and bond method. Also, is the braids uncomfortable? Thanks. Your feedback will be most appreciated.
PS.
Hi Hannah-
So far so good with the braid/sew method. It doesn't feel uncomfortable, but there is a bump where the braid is so if someone were to put their hand on my head where the perimeter of the hair system is, they would feel it. The only reason this would "bother" me is if I was single- and even then, I would probably chalk it up to "extensions" if I met a new guy who wanted to touch my head.
I can't believe you live in Georgia and can't find someone to braid and sew. You should call a shop the does cornrows and lace wigs for women of color. They have to add things like lace frontals and "closures" (where to do tracks of extensions on top of cornrows and then add in a closure on top that looks like skin w/hair growing out of it.)
When I got my braid done, I first saw a (literally) crazy older woman who screwed up a portion of the location of the braid. I went to a "black" salon and they tightened things down and did a great job.
I also did a search on craigslist.com in my area and found several braiders- one of which very specifically talked about putting a system on using braids. Unfortunately, she forgot to put her phone number in the ad, otherwise I would have gone straight to her. I did a search for "braiding" under "services".
Good luck!
Hi Sassy Gal,
Glad to hear it is working out for you!!. Posts like yours give me hope.
The only thing I worry about is my hairs are very fine. I still have hair (even though it is still coming out) but my hairs are fine. I worry it might break my existing hair or pull it out from traction. Is your's fine or thick? Is it what you have called a weave?
How often do you have to have the braids and system reattached? Can you wash your hair through the system?
Do you live in Georgia or Florida? It would be nice to meet someone that actually has a system and could show me how to put one on. I could even pay them for the trouble. I have never seen one on someone besides pictures on the computer. It is very unfamiliar to me and scary to me. I am afraid I may make a mistake; I guess I don't have the confidence to do this myself.
Sincerely,
My hair is pretty fine; thinning. I don't know if my existing hair is being damaged by the braids since I haven't had the system removed and rebraided yet.
I have a new system coming, so I will be redoing the attachment within the next couple weeks. I just got back from Costa Rica where it held up just fine. I could probably go another 2-3 weeks with the braid, so I think 2 months is about how long I will go.
If I wasn't so against shaving, I would shave. It is a much better/smoother/less detectable method of application. Braiding does create a bit of a lump where the braid is. Since my hair is long and wavy, it's not obvious, but if I had bone straight hair, it would be a problem.
I wash my hair with the system on. I live in Washington state, sorry I can't meet with you. There MUST be someone there that can help you with your first application. Did you try searching for places that do cornrows or lace front wigs?
Hannah,
