Hi!
I am currently wearing a top unit. It is a very light blonde. I have my growing hair bleached. Last time I had this done my scalp itched violently for the 45 minutes the bleach was on my head. I am thinking of going darker so I would only need single process color. However, it seems to be very difficult to match my growing hair to the piece now and I imagine I would have the same problem no matter what color I decide on.
My question is - would I be better off with a full cap?? I figure I would just have a fringe then on the sides and back and front to color. Would it be a sin to shave my whole head? My hair on sides and back are thick enough to get by with now.
Another question - Right now I only worry about detection on the front. With a full cap would the sides be an additional problem re detection? I like to wear my hair sort of swept back on the sides. A little upward line helps at my age!
I know you are as expert as one can be re wearing hair, I would appreciate your advise greatly.
Regards,
Nellie

Hi NN,
Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you - I've been up to my eyeballs with work and taking care of kids (we're raising our grandchildren full time now...Whew~!)
Anyway, as to the itching issue - I'd be willing to bet the farm that the mixture was probably too strong. That said, there is also the possibility that the stylist used another brand or developer and your skin didn't like it much. You'll need to do some detective work to see what the problem was.
Shaving your head under your system is never a sin and I endorse that wholeheartedly. After I did it the first time, I had to ask myself why I hadn't done it sooner - better comfort, better hygiene, much, much better bond. I've made some modifications on my system (style and color) and will be posting some new pix here in the near future. I'll be sure to try and get some definitive pix of my hairline and the hairline on the unit.
I went blond because my hair began to turn nearly white about three years ago and it has become mostly white on top with color remaining along the sides and back (think Meryl Streep in "Devil Wears Prada". I just wasn't ready to surrender to white hair just yet and decided to go blond.
Full cap or partial system is definitely a personal choice determined by lifestyle, amount of growing hair you still have and a host of other factors. The same would be true of hair color. I really hesitate to advise anyone on those choices and can only tell you what worked best for me.
I'm in the process of researching several factors particular to hair wearers and will be sending HD a comprehensive paper on that probably near the end of spring/early summer. I'll keep everyone posted on it because it may go a long way in answering some of the questions that remain uppermost in our minds even after we study all the info on the HD website. In the meantime, if I can help you further, I'll keep a closer eye on the boards and my email is attached to my profile.

Hi Hair Lady!
Thank you so much! It sounds like you have a very busy life!
I have been thinking maybe it would be worth it to me to maybe plan a trip to HD. I am in Florida, so it will be quite a trip! I have so much angst about my hair. Spending too much money at salons getting color and cuts. Last haircut is a disaster! Hard to find stylists that can really cut hair!
If I visit HD maybe I could get some professional help regarding topper or full cap, suitable style, and color. Of course I will wait for the weather to warm up!
What do you think??
Hi
I have pretty much made up my mind. Checked airfares and hotel accommodations. I am thinking early May. I figure two nights at hotel. Maybe I can go to Hershey Park, also would like to stop by QVC!!
I think you are absolutely correct. An on-site consult and then go back for first cut-in. That would help me a great deal.
Thanks again.
NN
Where, in Florida, are you located? I am also in Florida and was thinking of going to Pennsylvania since I would rather NOT make a mistake with the hair mold kit that I purchased. I also am totally confused with regard to attaching a full cap hairpiece onto a shaved head.
I have a hairpiece made of European human hair with clips and I use glue & doublesided tape at my front hairline. Unfortunately, the clips are thinning out my hair on the sides of my head where they are located, so I think it may be time to start shaving, but I have absolutely NO idea as to WHERE I am to shave. In other words, do I shave my entire head or just a portion of it? I believe that I may find out the answers if I go to the offices of HairDirect.
I was thinking of driving, rather than flying. I recently came back from a cruise and had to go through customs. I believe the cruise lines walk-through scanner was more sensitive than the ones that I have encountered at different airports, because it beeped and I had to be hand scanned with "the wand" and was totally mortified because I knew it was the metal clips from my hairpiece that caused the beeping, which is why I am now thinking of having a system glued to my scalp, rather than using clips. Also, I find that I am afraid to partake in many activities because I am afraid of my hair blowing up or coming off. I am hoping that glueing a hairpiece would solve this problem.
If we're not too far away from one another, maybe we could go on a little adventure together??? If not, then please go on the boards here and report back on your trip once you return.
Thanks---Songbird
Hi Songbird
I am in Central Florida. I have already booked my flight and hotel. I will be flying up on May 5 and have an appointment on the sixth.
I have been using super tape, but now I will try some High Definition at very front with tape just in back of it there, as Babe suggested. The rest will be just tape. Will be trying that this week.
The shaving is done on the whole area of where the hairpiece rests. It has to be close shaven at the perimeter where it is taped or glued.
Going to PA is quite expensive, but I am sure it will be worth it. I would like a new mold made, and need advice regarding style and color. I expect I will go back again for the attachment and first cut.
Do you think you may fly out? Or when do you think you will go. Maybe we can hook up!
Haven't been back to this site until today. I am unsure as to when I will go to HD in Pennsylvania. Probably towards the end of June or the beginning of July.
I live in South Florida and need to drive to New York which is why I've decided to go to HD in person, rather than ordering something through the mail. The wig that I have presently is really starting to show its' wear, so I don't know whether I will be able to wait until the summer to get a replacement. I am just SOOOOOOO afraid of doing my measurements incorrectly, even though I have purchased a mold kit from HD (haven't opened the box yet). I don't want to order the wrong type of base and lace, etc. I really don't understand the whole procedure. I know that the owner of the company has recently decided against a certain type of base to go along with "human hair", which is probably the base that I would've wanted to have ordered. I also use clips and want to get away from them, but I cannot even begin to imagine how to shave my head in the proper manner, which is why I would rather have a hair stylist from HD do it initially.
Anyway, good luck to you when you go to Pennsylvania in May. Please let me know how your meeting went.
Songbird
Hi Songbird!
My appointment with HD is on May 6th. Then I will be going back again for the first application, probably early July, have to see how long it takes for the new units to arrive. So, if the timing is right, maybe we will both be there at the same time!
If your current wig is really showing wear, maybe you could go ahead and do the fitting now, you should get your new units in about 8 weeks, check with a tech and see what she says. Then, if you are not completely happy with the units you can still go to PA for a new mold.
Good luck to you, and Happy Easter!
Hi Nervous Nellie,
I am looking forward to meeting you on May 6. I am sure that you will learn alot when you're here, and I have no doubt that I will learn from you as well! The weather has been very nice so you should have a very nice drive to our facility. Let me know if there is anything that I can help you with! Until then...have a great weekend.
