Hey guys,
I'm thinking of (finally!) going for a lace unit with a poly edge all around. Now, I've never used tape on poly before, and was just wondering how you folks that use this method find it? How flush to the head does it feel? Can you feel the ridge from the poly?
Another factor in this for me is that my hair underneath at the back grows VERY fast. I'm talking a week from shaving for a few mm's worth of growth - i.e. more than just "stubble". Any thoughts on how well the tape will hold? I'm aiming for a 2 week hold on the sides and back. In the front, along the hairline, I'm going to be using liquid adhesive, so that's pretty much a 7-10 day thing, as I have a slightly oily scalp. You guys were just dying to know that, right.....................
All stories welcome!
Peace!
THG :-)
Hi THG-
I switched to poly on the sides and back a few months ago for quicker cleanup and it's not for me. Yes you can clearly feel the ridge and also I have trouble getting the poly to lay flat to my head without rippling. You have to use a layer of red tape and then a layer of whatever your preferred tape is. So, you have the poly edge and two layers of tape. For me, I find that the stiffness is what causes ripples in a few spots around the edge. I find it very annoying. I'm going back to ordering my units with full lace again, no poly.
Also, unless you have a really thick set of bangs/fringe in the front, I would not get poly in the front.
Sue
THG,
I don't like any poly at all. The reasons Sue provided are all spot on. In addition, don't forget what we posted about when you were first thinking about ordering a lace base with a poly perimeter...these concerns are still factors to consider.

Boy do I hate that sound!!!

Not born with hair, but I've gotthe intelligence to find it, the money to pay for it, the patience to "stick" it on just right, the will to make it work, the confidence to wear it boldlyand the smile to wear under it!
Hi Hairguy , should be no problem for ya , I've been wearing a lace unit with poly back and sides for quite a few years now with no problems. I use Ultrahold in the front with no-shine tape or Supertape strips. I do redo the front after 7-10 days though, especially during summer. The tape will stick pretty good to the stubble !

Hey Sue, Babe, Dan,
Thanks for the responses! :-) Conflicting views... I guess it all comes down to the usual "what works for some..." kind of thing! Ha, I might try it! Reason I want the poly is, as Sue said, to reduce clean-up time. And for some durability, too. I'm only thinking of going for the thinnest U-shape possible for the poly section, then the rest is going to be all lace. Hoping this will reduce the scratch-factor! Man... I hate that sound! ;-)
As for tape... hm... I've heard that some people, like Sue, use liner tape and standard tape, and some people just use one layer of tape? Any thoughts on that, guys?
Thanks again!
I've heard that the standard tape without the liner tape is a disaster to clean up. So if you are looking for easier clean up, you'll want to use the liner tape. It really does make clean up a snap.
Thanks Sue :-)
Ah... the decisions... do I want easy clean-up, or a less obvious ridge on the sides and back...?
Keep ya posted!
I understand--I was going through the same decision process a few months back. I've decided to go back to a longer cleaning time in exchange for a more comfortable fit.
Honestly though, I think the fit and detectability of the poly could be affected by the shape of your unit. My unit is likely much bigger than yours and whereas it lays flat on the sides and back, it's where it wraps around the back sides of my head that it doesn't fit right because of the stiffness of the poly. If your unit is smaller and doesn't wrap around your head it might lay just fine. You would still have a bit of a ridge though.
Ah... the decisions! haha!
Well, I'm using a full polly with a lace front right now, and just adhesive all over, so I'm thinking all lace with poly perimeter has to be a definite upgrade! :-) I hope!
It's always a tradeoff. Less detectable = messier cleanup. Easier cleanup = more detectable.
These days I don't do anything but 100% lace. It's a little different with a full cap, but for me there is just no competition. The extra 15 minutes I spend cleaning the lace is well worth being able to avoid obvious ridges, especially when using poly with tape. Lace with glue is the ultimate. I use a lace base with tape for strength and glue for a fine finish. Best of both worlds.

hi,
for a good non detectablitly factor theres only one way to go and thats full lace,.,,poly has an edge that is a nightmare is someone feels it
