Removing Piece without Solvent -- Tim Ferris Video

  • Removing Piece without Solvent -- Tim Ferris Video

I reviewed Tim Ferris' mirror slide video the other day and he talked about not using a chemical product to remove his piece.  From what I understand,  he just gets it wet in the shower to the point the tape loosens up and then he starts pulling gently until the unit comes off.  My question is,  do many of you do this same thing?  I am thinking by not using a solvent,  the tape does not break down as much and clean up is much, much easier and quicker to do.

Am I correct in this thinking?

I will provide feedback on my own question.  Last night I was able to remove my piece in the shower.  After I got it good and wet, I started working from the back and was able to work my fingers underneath the edge of the lace.  I gave up trying to remove it without the help of solvent, however.  Perhaps if I had waited and continued to work it without the help of the citrus solvent, I would have been able to...but after spending a good 7 plus minutes, I decided to spray the solvent in a few places.  This helped me get the piece  off,  BUT,  I got solvent on my face and even though not directly in my eyes,  the pain from the solvent on my closed eyelids  stung like a  big dog!   I would not recommend doing this (solvent dripping onto face). OUCH!

I was then able to peel the tape off much easier than when I have doused  the unit in solvent and the tape has  turned  to goo.   Still,  with the mirror slide,  it took me something like 45 minutes to remove all of the tape residual.  I must have done the mirror slide at least a dozen and a half times...or more.

My biggest time factor in removing--cleaning and reattaching is still the residual removal along the poly perimeter.   I am still looking for suggestions for how I might be able to speed this step up.  I typically wear between 7 and 10 days and use supertape.

    hi,

i just use lace release i dont see the point of risking ripping the lace which can easliy be done with tims method

tim has perfected this but in my opinion the risk of ripping the lace is too highTongue Tied

with lace release as long as yuo quickly rinse off the alcohol with louke warm water there will be no real damage done

i have had many systems and as long as alcohol is not left on too long the longevity of the hair softess will be okStick out tongue

I don't understand why using Lace Release is bad. I begin by spraying one or two sprays on the back center edge of my unit. That is the only area where the LR gets on the hair itself. After a few seconds, the unit starts to lift and I am spraying UNDERNEATH the unit on my scalp as I peel it forward. It doesn't damage the hair at all because it doesn't get on the hair, except for that one spot in the back and I've never noticed a problem with the hair there.

I use Supertape as well and I would rip my skin off if I tried to peel the unit up without LR. I think the shower concept is more about using the steam to lift the unit than the water John. I think that would help but I don't particularly want to take my unit off in the shower. It doesn't work with the way I do my whole routine. Besides, you have to use pretty hot water to make steam and hot water isn't good for your hair either.

    Dear Encouraged.

Yes, removing residual tape/glue from the poly perimeter can be a real pain, but you can virtually eliminate the mess and cleanup time by doing one simple thing - place a layer of red-liner tape on the poly perimeter first.  The red-liner sticks very well to the poly and has virtually no break down.  It does not however hold very well to the scalp.  So, after you have applied the red-liner on the poly, you then place your super tape on top of the red-liner.  This makes cleanup a breeze, and saves wear and tear on the poly.

Also, I'm not sure how everyone else applies tape to their units, but after I apply my first piece, I lay each successive piece slightly overlapping on the last.  When it comes time to remove the tape, I start by lifting up the piece that was first applied and am able to pull all the tape off as one single long piece.  Saves a ton of time.

Hi Sue,  I too use SuperTape and reattach every 2 weeks. So I should avoid hot water on my hair ? Does it harm the hair ?   I take the unit off in the hot shower with no problem after 2 weeks time, no LR needed.

    Hi Tony-

Yes, the steam will help lift the unit. Hot water can dry out the hair (like it does to your skin). It opens the hair shaft and can cause frizz and dry, brittle hair over time. If you are using hot water, at least rinse with cool water so the hair shaft closes properly. I prefer a good hot shower myself but I do adjust the water to as cool as I can handle when I am rinsing my hair.

For removing tape from the poly, warm it up with a hair dryer first.  Between that and some solvent (like SuperSolv) on the front lace, tape clean-up can take less than five minutes.  The hair dryer is, without question, the cleanest way to remove red liner.  It leaves almost no "stretch mark" residue at all.

    Hello all!

My base in the video is a full lace, i dont have a polly which i know is alot harder to remove tape without chemical help.

Since i made that video a while back, i have stopped using tape and now only use glue. The unit sits flush with my scalp with no 'ridge' and doesn't itch as there is no movement. I can take my unit off after a week without any issues dry, then mirror slide and its its clean in 10 mins total time.  You do need to start at the back and slowly pull forward.

For those with long hair (their own) might need to use a lace release as it might hurt but if you have short hair like me then there is no problems as your own hair will not get caught up.

The trick to the mirror slide is to make sure the unit is bone dry, if its damp you will smudge the glue into the lace, i put a large strip of food wrap on the mirror or shower door then you can just throw that away with no need to clean the mirror :-)

Simple, fast and kind to the hair and base. Less fade and breakage as alcohol in its true form is not good news for the hair. Plus you will find no hairs will pull threw the bottom of the base.

    Hope that helps
