Yesterday I applied the Back2Natural Medium Ash Brown to one of my older units.  I took another's advice and detached the unit before combing it through my hair (just to mitigate the chance of inadvertently darkening the knots).  Very pleased with the color.  Took out the red tones and the hair feels softer now.  I'll give a follow-up after I wear it this week.

    BobRobertz,

I just want to mentioned that i have been using Back2Natural, and for me, i use Dark Natural Ash Brown, coloring conditioner and i must say it is what the "doctor ordered"!

I enjoy the pure fact that i can now MATCH my sides and back with my topical unit or vice versa. There was some reddish, fading of color on my unit, actually right after i started going swimming at my local gym! Bad idea UNLESS you get and i did, a silicone swimming cap. That is to protect my financial investment, i must say and thanks to CurlySue for recommending the cap.

I didn't realized that i have natural hair with the HD24 full lace unit, but it is NOT attached anymore, thus the delicate care that has to be considered.

i also put a review on the "store" section of HD about my own experience with B2N.

Back2Natural is fantastic.  As you said, it conditions the hair as well as colors and tones down unwanted reddish colors.  I love it!
  • Re: Back2Natural

Thanks, Donald.  I added a review as well.  As I mentioned, it was easy to apply, and thick enough that the conditioner didn't run down to the knots when I applied it with a comb before attachment.  I've had good luck with the longevity of my hair color, but will definitely be able to extend the life of some of my older units.

Hey BobRobertz, Blondie12 and Donald T,

Thank you all for your input on the Back2Natural.  It really helps us to relay the feedback to the clients that have questions about it.  I haven't heard a negative comment about this product yet.  Sounds like it's a keeper!

Love this product! It does of great job of putting color back into the hair while making it soft at the same time! It's very mild so you can use it as much or as little as you want. Yes

    HD-Lisa,

    You're welcome...

Also, i love the fact that i don't have to use my old hair coloring for men, anymore. The fact that back2natural can be use regularly and on BOTH my natural hair and hair system at the same time, won me over!! It basically saves me money in the long run. I now can spend that extra money on other products, as well!!

    Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering what everyone's experience has been with using the Back2Natural on thier own hair! Does it give the same great results that it gives on the hair in the units? Does it help to hide/cover grey hair?Confused

    HD-Mary,

Since i keep a journal that i started May 15 2009 (the day i was fitted for my first unit with Diane),  with my experiences with wearing a hair system, i noticed that the only issue i have, since my last post about my "love" for Back2Natural color conditioner, is that the product does what it is suppose to do for me and that is to "match" my natural with my topical unit, especially when the topical system has change colors to reddish, orange or gold looking.

But through my ongoing experimentations and the washing, cleaning, conditioning, weekly removing, retaping, and reattachments, i'm noticing that my natural hair on the sides and back will basically "rinse" out the B2N when i shampoo, for instance.

I then have to reestablish the B2N on my sides and back again. I didn't know that B2N will wash out when i shampoo and the reason why i know is because i have some natural gray hair on my sides that come right back after i shampoo.

I see why this product can be used over and over again or even on a daily basis, simply because it is a color conditioner, not a hair coloring product, if you know what i mean.

But because i don't want to use the product so much in order to keep the colors matching, i now use my old standby Hair Coloring for Men and that is only to allow my sides and back color to STAY IN even after i shampoo.

So to be honest, i still use B2N on the top since my topical unit is NOT naturally fading gray and i use my Hair Coloring for Men to keep the gray on the sides and back, at bay, which can last for up to 2 weeks for me.

Again, the point of Back2Natural for me is the fact that one can use it daily if you like and that is why it is called a "color conditioner" simply because, i believe, it easily can wash out after a shampoo, which i didn't really know that in the beginning, until i was noticing the re-occurance of my gray coming back after a shampoo.

As of this post, my unit has started to turn reddish, orange or gold color at the top. Since i keep a journal, this particular unit has been remove/reattach, washed 13 times since i first put it on, august 20 2009, 9 weeks ago.

My unit was never reddish, orange or gold looking only until this past saturday (Oct 24 2009) and i'm thinking that the sun has nothing to do with that because i'm in the Fall season here in Silver Spring, MD, and even though the Sun comes and goes at this point, my observation is that my unit color is finally fading, not that it is a bad thing, because i have and 8 a year plan, but my point is that my unit is going into its 90 days of use (from aug 20 to nov 20) but right now it has been 9 weeks, which is a good 2 months already and my unit is still flawless to me, and this is the FIRST time that my unit has started to change colors.

No matter what, i have a choice to either keep wearing my current unit up to Nov 20 (90 days) or i can change at this point since it is turning colors on me, but since i have B2N, i will keep wearing this unit and use the B2N on the top.

I will keep writing in my journal about the process of when my units have subtle changes, and to me it is only because of "wear and tear" sort of speak.

I have written enough and hope this information helps...

  • Re: Back2Natural

I've had great luck with B2N conditioner.  Not much gray to cover yet (I have about 5% added to my unit) and I typically apply it when detached.  Definitely took out the brassy tones to two of my older units so I've got them in rotation again!

The only thing I've been the least bit leery of is applying the conditioner while my unit is attached (in case getting the conditioner on the base might darken the knots).   Has anyone had any experience with using it while wearing your hair?  If not, I may use one my older units and try it out myself.

  • Re: Back2Natural

    BobRobertz,

I probably didn't mention that part in my previous post on this thread, but yes, i ALWAYS use the B2N when i wear my unit. It is actually easier for me, because i use the coloring conditioner very carefully and since the unit is on my scalp while i'm performing this task, i feel much more confident that i won't screw up.

Since i have used other coloring products for years to cover my grey, but with B2N, i understand your point about the knots. The tools (very small color application comb-like brushes), i use these instruments for the B2N and slighty brush the coloring over and across my topical system, i then slightly comb in the color, too.

I get as close as i can to my knots and i use a pair of magnifying eyeglasses (lol), seriously, to be able to see exactly what i'm doing. I leave it in for about 15 minutes myself, and i then rinse in cold filtered shower water until the rinsing is crystal clear and i'm then ready to damp dry and ready to style. I do not blow dry at all, not even my unit when i wash and rinse. I always allow my unit to dry near a fan that i use for my system, when i remove to perform my weekly maintenance.

When i color with B2N and since i keep my unit on, i pat dry and let my system naturally dry while i'm styliing. I prefer this method because i just don't want to use a hair dryer, because of my own personal fears. I rather let dry naturally, my preference.

    Hope this helps...

  • Re: Back2Natural

I hate to be the negative-nany in this case, or be the first to report anything negative..but I ordered Back2Natural Dark Brown because I have read here that it can work on real hair (I haven't purchased a sytem yet).

I wanted to see how it would work on me.. I hate the Just For Men stuff..

Anyway, I used it twice. Exactly as described the first time and keft it on for 10 minutes, The second time I tried massaging it into dry hair, thinking I'd missed something and left it in 15 seconds.
It did not do anything at all. It did not change the color of my hair at all, not in the slightest.  I was very dissapointed. I lathered it up, and put a lot more in the second time.

My hair is reddish because of the just for men and the slight graying I have on the sides. I figured this would do exactly what it would for a system that had lost color (as my real hair does).

is it possible I am doing something wrong?

  • Re: Back2Natural

    Hi ylmrog,

It does not sound like you're doing anything wrong but, maybe expecting too much from this type of productTongue Tied.

Back2Natural is NOT a permanent color like Just for Men. Back2Natural is a conditioner with toner that can help to blend the grey hair with your natural hair color. This is not something that will happen after just one or two uses. After time and continual use of the product you will gradually notice the blending affects that it provides.

An actual permanent hair color opens the cuticle of the hair shaft and deposits the color and then re-seals the cuticle sealing in the color. Back2 Natural is a deposit only toner. Meaning that it deposits on the hair shaft but, does not affect the cuticle or hair color in a permanent way.

Hopefully Ian Gavet, the creator of Back2Natural will help us explain this even better for you and others.

  • I hope that what I have explained helps you to understand a little better.

  • Re: Back2Natural

    Hi ylmrog,

Back2 Natural is aways more effective on faded processed hair, it will work on Natural hair color to some extent, it works by being absorbed into the porous hair.

If you have used Just for Men it should work unless the hair has been colored so repeatedly that their is no room 'in the hair' for the pigment, due to the prior denseness of the color.

To check your application technique this is the method:

This is a Conditioner , it's not a shampoo and it's used after the hair is shampooed.

Shampoo your hair ( you must remove product build up as it is a barrier)

Towel dry the hair or squeeze out excess moisture.

Apply the product to the reddest areas first before massaging in.

Use as much is as necessary especially the first time to cover the hair completely.

Leave it in the hair for 5 - 10 ( even 20 would be ok)

then rinse the hair with cooler water - do not shampoo it out.

I hope this helps explain the product a bit more for you
