My First Removal

Well,  this morning was my inagural removal, shave and clean-up.  It took me way too long, but it is finished and my hair is drying and just about ready for my first attachment.   It is all such a learing process!

One observation is, I have several red irritated spots on my scalp where the tape was. I wore for 10 days and Supertape was used.  I had no itching or discomfort while wearing.   I am wondering if the red spots are just part of wearing and using tape.I noticed the guy doing the removal video had a number of red spots on his head too.   Is this a normal thing or should I consider using another tape?

Also, I used solvent and a nail brush to remove the tape residual.  I noticed I accidentally broke a few of the delicate knots with the brush.  I have just srayed knot sealer on the underneath base.   Hopefully,  I didn't do too much damage and hair won't start falling out in  clumps!

I would really be interested in reactions from some of you seasoned folks!  Smile

    hi encouraged,

this red rash thing happens to all of us..i think its mainly because the skin hasnt breathed properley for days and thus it goes red

however a good scalp protector reduces this problem..i dont think its anything to worry about at all..

every week i take my system off and let my head breath and the red rash goes..its just a case of ltting your head breath..and the skin ..Wink

No, red spots or scalp irritation are not normal at all - you should never have this.  You may want to Proflex which is what I use.  I don't know if it holds up as long as S.T. but it may be worth a try to buy 1 pack.  Perhaps use 2 kinds of tape for 1 attachment period, one on the left side, and the second on the right side of your scalp.  That way you can compare irritation / adhesion / breakdown which may help with a final choice you run with.

Breaking of the hair knots - Did you do the all important mirror slide first to get most of the residue off that way?

the guy in the hd video's scalp is infected, you can see ware the edge's turned a brownish color indicating an(oozing discharge ) i am not trying to be the (bad guy) bud the truth is the truth,he had to have waited 2 weeks for it to clear up in order to do the next video shoot of him attaching it.

    hi brian,

i  have tried them all..with the holes without em...but in my opinion its the suffocation of the skin on the scalp that causes the redness..

yes bri i have tried proflex ..thanksBig Smile

i dont have oozing though or discharge..just mild redness...but to me its no problem ..after a day off ..its fineStick out tongue

    Hi Brian-

I get the red ring too. There is no irritation or rash, just a pinkish ring, similar to when you take a band-aid off of the skin. Many people experience this as normal. I'm sure it depends on your skin and your sensitivity to the removal chemicals and the tape pulling away from the skin. My ring does not go away, not even overnight, but I am certain that if I felt so inclined to walk around bald for a few days it would disappear. No worries, no chance of that happening.Indifferent

Babe says one must be dead or "have no blood flow to the head" if they do not get redness. Stick out tongue http://www.hairdirect.com/community/forums/post/22980.aspx Whereas I don't necessarily subscribe to this point of view, I do agree that it is common and not always cause for concern if there is no itching or skin eruption.

    Hi Brian D,

I want to add, and for me, i remove my unit for cleaning, etc. from 7-10 days each time, and i have always noticed, in my case, red spots here and there on my scalp, and more of them AFTER i start shampoo and rinse. But i perform a final rinse in complete COLD shower-filtered water and the redness is much reduced or just disappears.

I was concerned in the beginning, but now that i see these red-like spots, i monitor my scalp to make sure there is no serious scalp issues, because that is NOT what i need.

But overall and by the time i'm ready to reattach, the redness is gone and i'm quite satisfied. To be honest about this issue, i rather wait and i do, until i "see" that the redness has subsided and disappeared BEFORE i reattach, just to make sure that my scalp is NOT or a portion of my scalp is NOT infected in some way.

That would be devastating to say the least, because i would be afraid to reattach on top of an obvious infection. Again, the redness, for me, is like spoty but disappears after i perform a final rinse in good old COLD water, too.

But as CurlySue stated, it does happen and also with me, too. In my view, it is the pressure of bonding for even a week that can be the culprit but again, not a major problem that i have been concern about. As long as i see my scalp WITHOUT any redness BEFORE i reattach, i'm fine with this side effect, since it probably can't be avoided, in my opinion.

    Hi Encouraged,

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond...but I'm sure you've heard the story way too many times by now...lol so I'll spare you and everyone else!

Yep, I did post that about being dead or having no bloodflow...I don't proclaim to be a doctor - I just play one on HD...ha ha ! Of course I'm kidding..

I can give you an analogy that you may be familiar with and maybe that will help. If you shave with an older razor and then scrub your face with alcohol or solvent, I bet it stings a bit, right? Well, I think the pink area is a combination of not allowing your scalp to breathe under the tape and from using products with alcohol or solvents to remove your hair.  I have found that it really helps a lot to remove every 7-10 days. The cleanup takes a lot less of your time and for some reason, it helps my scalp too!

Also, somewhere I read that you were experiencing a slight lift at the edge of the tape edges after wearing it for a day or so. I had the same issue until I read a tip about actually positioning the lace approximately 1/8" further away from your natural hair than you think it should be. When I had natural bangs, this was always very frustrating to me since I tried to line it up exactly with where my hair ended. Then, a day later, the very edge would lift. So, I tried it as recommended and believe it or not, just that little tiny distance away from your natural hair makes ALL the difference.

Give it a try and let us know if it works for you!

Thanks for the well wishes! I start PT around October 23rd. Four weeks after surgery. I am trying to be a good girl and do all the exercises to gain flexibility and strengthen my other muscles - hurts like crazy, but hopefully, it will keep me on track for success!

    Thanks for asking...
