Hi all! After being really disappointed with TDI knot sealer (I wear lace base HD03 and the unit was losing tons of hair every time I washed it), I decided to try Matte clear acrylic spray (found in hardware stores). The shedding decreased by 80-90%, I was amazed!!!
Tip: Because of the really strong smell, spray and let dry BEFORE washing the unit. It needs more time to dry than the knot sealer (30-60 min depending on how many coats you use).
For the first time in my life, I'm not alone in this...
I would be very cautious. I would start by contacting the manufacturer and inquire on the affects of this product when exposed to skin.

Of course, I understand that some people are more sensitive to chemicals than others. I personally haven't noticed any irritation on my skin, but this doesn't apply to everyone.
I do this every week. I turn the unit inside out, put it on a styro head, open a big hole in a plastic grocery bag and put the unit through the hole in a way that only the lace is exposed and the hair is protected. The hair is about 14" long (from crown).
Found this thread very interesting because TDI Knot Sealer has worked great for me. I make sure the cap is dry and then, with the spray nozzle about 2 inches away from the unit, I'm very liberal when I apply it and make sure the base is dry, dry, dry before applying the tape and then putting on the unit. I usually wait a while before styling to give everything time to set on my head. (Yes, I do my de- and re- at night.) I've heard other hair wearers say the same thing about TDI - it either works great or not at all. I'm wondering if it's a matter of technique, amount used, etc. It would be very interesting to try and find out. That the TDI doesn't seem to be working right for B&B is another interesting issue because she's a very experienced wearer...
Hmmmmm, maybe this can be put on my list of experiment projects... Egore, fire up the lab...
Important Caveat: If you opt to use some type of product that is not specifically formulated for hair replacement situations, please exercise caution. Long-term exposure to any type of chemical can be dangerous but this is particularly true if it is not formulated for long-term human exposure.

If this is Krylon, I've used it as a varnish ( not on my unit ) and the fumes are pretty strong. I don't think I'd want it next to my skin for a long time, though. Be careful not to get any of the spray on the hair itself, or you might create acryllic dandruff. Let us know if you have a reaction to it later on. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip Hairlady! I love that you experiment with all this stuff and then deliver your results to us. I'm sure you know we are so grateful! I, for one, truly respect your tenacity! I can just picture you in your lab coat with hairpieces everywhere hanging from clothespins all over your "lab." Clipboards full of notes and theories and spray bottles everywhere!
I never heard of knot saver before probably because my previous suppliers wanted all the hair to fall out so they could charge me an arm and a leg to add hair. I purchased it and will try it out!
Hi all!
First of all, let me say that I wear base H03 (lace) and the major shedding starts after the 2nd-3rd month. It makes sense, all the shampoo, conditioner, hair products used start loosening the knots, I don't complain about that.
Re the use of acrylic spray, I use it BEFORE washing the unit, so that as little of it as possible comes in contact with my skin. Maybe hairlady is right, maybe I'm using too little of TDI and doesn't make much of a difference, I will also experiment using more to see if it makes a difference.
Another factor that contributed to the major shedding on this unit is the hair pulling in order to get rid of the knots. I solved this by using the chlorox-ammonia method (works miracles, not only gets rid of all the tangles and makes hair really soft, but also prevents new tangles from forming).
