Hey all!
I thought I'd start a thread for us curly girls! I need some help and I'm sure this thread will help others too.
I'm on a mission for luscious curls. As you can see from my pics, right now I am wearing wavy hair. Though I think it looks nice, it's not really what I want (or who I am) and it's difficult to cover my own curls with the wavy hair. I have to straighten my own growing hair every day to hide my curls, otherwise they stick out from underneath the unit very noticeably. Over the years I've been unsuccessful at attaining the curl I want in a unit (from any hair company). My natural hair has spiral "finger curls." They are about a 3/4" diameter curls with about a 5-6" spring. I love it! However, I have been unsuccessful at getting a natural-looking spiral curl perm. Also, I have found that the processing of a tighter perm causes the unit to get dry and bushy and the curl is never a nice smooth curl but instead a frizzy, stringy wavy thing--regardless of products, conditioners, etc. Though it always look great wet, it usually just ends up as a giant nest shortly after it's completely dry.
Here is a picture of my real hair, next to the hair in an old unit that had an E wave. You can really see the difference. Now I wear an F-G wave which is even less wavy and less processed than the E wave.
So, I'm wondering if any of you curly girls out there can help me out. How are your curls? Does anyone have a perm that would match my natural hair? How do you feel permed units look, generally speaking? Is anyone able to achieve smooth, frizz-free curls? Any way to combat the Brillo look? How do you get your natural smooth luscious curls??
Ideally, I want this look.
Let me know what you all think. I'm hoping that lots of curly girls will chime in. Let us know how you achieve great curls, what your problem areas have been and how you've overcome them.
Thanks for your input!
Sue
Curly Sue,
I would recommend a 50/50 blend of human and synthetic. I know most people shy away when they hear "synthetic" but honestly that is the only way to have the curl hold w/out the frizz. You will be able to keep the definition of the curl to match your own curl. By the way, loved your pictures! Thank you for posting them.

Hi Curly Sue,
Thanks for starting this thread. You can add me to this list of "Curly Girls" beacause I've been one all my life!
I think my HD curls are pretty good, although the hair at the nape of my neck gets dry, strawlike and frizzy. I just keep adding Curls Rock leave in conditioner to them whenever I can. This seems to help some.
Come on Curly Girls.....we have to stick together!

Hair is a beautiful thing!
Does anyone have any experience with the 50/50 human synthetic mix? I would think it would be difficult to care for and very tricky. What kinds of products to use? Wouldn't the human hair still frizz and the synthetic stay smooth? I would think that would cause lots of tangling and look odd. Though, I've also read in the forums about the synthetic hair frizzing. So then how is this better?
I know that you cannot apply heat to the synthetic hair. Does direct heat from the sun cause the synthetic to straighten or just hair dryer/curling iron heat? How does hot water affect it?
Anyone with any experience with the 50/50 mix, please provide details. Thanks!
Hi CurlySue!
I have no experience with the HD hair yet, but I do have experience with human hair extensions which are most-likely similar to what they have here. My own natural curl is similar to what you have shown in your photo. I have extensions permed and attached and the perm was not a good match to my own springy, bouncy natural curl. My stylist used a spiral application on white and purple rods which should have been a perfect match to my own curl. Permed hair is just not as good as the real thing. It ends up looking flat and old like an old perm on regular hair.
I'm glad you brought this up since I will be ordering my new hair very soon! I am thinking of going with the wavy hair look you have so I don't have to fight the yucky permed look. Maybe the HD people have a new and improved way of perming I don't know about. That would be great! I'll be watching this thread and hope there are more answers for you! (us!)

Have you abandon the idea of getting hair from some place else?
Hi Giselle-
I'm definitely staying with HD, no matter what. I love HD (BIG HUG!). I just want to be sure that there is not something I'm missing before purchasing European naturally curly hair to supply to HD to make my units. It's an additional step, an added expense, and something I'd just rather not deal with if I don't have to. So, I'm trying to find out what other women do for curls, how they order their perm, what products work best, etc. I think that the wave I have is really nice and though I experience tangling because of the processing, I would be very happy with this if it weren't for my own curls poking through. Right now I flat iron my own hair every day so it blends better with the unit hair, and it's really damaging my hair. It's also nerve wracking because if I sweat or get wet or get caught in the rain (like I just did the other day) my own hair curls right back up. It's rather awkward.
NancyAnn is right, if you have natural spiral curls, a perm will always look more like a tight wave next to them. I had this problem with every unit I ever had, even the ones that weren't from HD. NancyAnn, HD did do two tight spiral perms for me--one with white and gray rods, the other a bit looser--they were basketweave perms and the ends did spiral a little bit but the frizz and dryness was a problem. The tighter the perm is, the more chemicals are used and the dryer the hair gets. Then it rebels by frizzing out on us! Since you are going with the full cap and don't have to match your own hair,, you might like the wave. It's less frizzy and more smooth since there's less processing. Just note that with this F-G wave I have, even one dry comb through to smooth and remove tangles makes the unit very straight. So, for half the day I have wavy hair and for the other half of the day I have straight hair. In that sense it's quite versatile!
Like I said, I DO like the wave, it's just problematic with my own curls. I really hope someone chimes in that has the 50/50 blend so we can hear about it.
Thanks ladies!
CurlySue,
I would definately like to participate in this thread for curly girls. I haven't received my unit yet so I'll probably have more questions than answers. I have had experience with both synthetic and human hair clip in topper pieces but never with a combination of the two. The synthtic never matches my natural hair and I tend to have to put it on and then pull my hair back into a pony tail or bun so that you can't really notice the two side by side. It's just too sleek and shiny for me.
The hair integrations that I have been chatting with you about was human hair. It was supposed to be curly hair but I got straight hair instead. I think it still blended well because my hair naturally gets frizzy and so did the integration piece so when I brushed it they both blended well.
I'm a bit confused about what kind of curls to order. When I wash my hair and then let it dry naturally, it curls into tight curls. That is except for the top. The top has always been wavy and not curly. When I blow dry it or brush it after it dries then the curls really loosen up. They almost end up really wavy instead of curly. How do I know what kind of curl to order?
Good morning, Everyone!
I have a detangling product to share with you that I have found to be completely AMAZING. I have read a lot about the system hair getting fuzzy, frizzy and tangled and I wonder if someone out there has tried this product or is willing to try it. I have human hair extensions now and will be ordering my hair from HD as soon as I get my kit. I must say this product makes my vent brush glide through my hair like no other...like SILK! I would love to know this works on the system fuzzing problem. Maybe this can help those of you who are struggling!

Nancy Ann,
This miracle product sure sounds amazing. Who makes it? Wow, I would sure love to give it a try. HD is always looking for tried and true products to add to our Store. Thank you for the tip.
Thanks Random Guy. I appreciate your kind words and feedback. I don't think the look I have is bad at all and I may stick with it, I'm just trying to explore the curl thing a little more. It's been 6 months since I had curls and I'll probably go through all this effort trying to get the perfect curl just to decide I don't like it anymore! Ha! Women are so fickle!
Girls! Good news! I sent some photos to HD and talked with them and my wonderful rep Kathy. She spoke with the factory and is forwarding the pics I sent her (one is the girl above). They say they should be able to do a spiral perm without the frizz! I'm going to place the order in about two weeks so in a couple of months I'll have some feedback (and pics if it turns out well). I told my rep Kathy that some ladies may be looking for something similar so when you are ready to order or have questions, give her a call. Blondie12, she is sending the pic of the girl that you like to the factory as a sample to make my unit from.
