OK, everyone, we’ve gotta keep this hush-hush. I’ve taken control of the blog post for today, and we can’t let the marketing team know. I’m Emma, the numero uno nerd around here, otherwise known as the Director of Technology.
A couple weeks ago we took our site offline, holed up in the “garage,” and worked feverishly to unveil a new, upgraded store. We want to give you all some background so you know just what we were doing and where we are going with it.
First, our old store was…well, old and outdated. We have a lot of really awesome ideas for creating a better shopping experience for all of you, and we kept hitting a brick wall with our technology. Since developers don’t work well with headaches, we decided it was time to do something about it. So, we did a complete brain transplant on our store. On the surface, most of it still looks the same, but there are a few keys areas that you will see differences in.
Want to know how the much shipping for the items in your cart will set you back? Want to know when you can expect to get it? Now you can use the Shipping Calculator on your Cart page to get all the details.
The checkout process
We spent a lot of time thinking about how we could make checkout easier and better for you. We ended up with a step by step checkout process that gives you control but is simple to use. We think you’ll like it, so let us know what you think!
For all you Paypal lovers out there, we’ve made it much easier for you to pay with your Paypal account. When you opt to pay with Paypal, you’ll be able to add your payment in Paypal as part of your checkout. And, if I could think of another excuse to say Paypal in this paragraph, I would!
U.S. Postal Service deliveries
You can now choose to have your order shipped by USPS (for valid addresses). In the two weeks since the update, this feature has gotten a lot of love from you all!
Tokenized credit cards
OK, I know, what the heck does that mean? Well, it means we take your security seriously around here. If you’re going to trust us with your credit card, we’re going to make sure it’s safe and secure.
A token is a unique identifier that can be used instead of the actual credit card data such as the number, CVV code, and expiration date. If a system using tokens was compromised, only the tokens could be taken, not the actual meaningful data. Now, when you give us your credit card, we send the credit card through a secure web service to our payment gateway. The gateway verifies the card and sends us back a token. From that point on, we use the token instead of the actual credit card information.
Lots of other little things
I’m not going list out all the other little details that we’ve changed, but I’m sure you’ll find a few in your next shopping experience.
What’s coming next?
We’ve got big things in the works. Of course, we like to keep some of it mysterious so we can surprise you all down the road. But let’s just say that we are working on some major updates to improve the shopping experience for our friends across the pond. We also know that our site isn’t the fastest site out there. We’re working on improving that as well.
We always love to get your feedback (even when it hurts) so tell us what your experience has been like – the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Uh oh, here comes Andy. I’ve got to sign out before he figures out what I’m up to. Until next time…
