More on Principles

Thursday, February 15, 2007 7:55 AM

At our regularly scheduled weekly executive meetings we usually start by discussing a principle that we have been working on over the past weeks and months.  The most recent of these is the deeper meaning of being pro-active.  Brandon, our director of marketing, being the big picture guy that he is, asked me to make a list of all the principles we will be studying in the months and years ahead.  To give you a glimpse of the kind of culture we are building in order to serve our clients better, here are my notes back to Brandon.

Brandon, at our last meeting, we were discussing a principle and you asked me to make a list of the most important principles that we will be using to develop our culture.  I said there is about seven, actually there are about seven times seven.  I jotted down a few that I could think of.

All of these good principles are inner connected and inner related.  They build on one another, much like the synergy that will be developed after we learn to practice them  and they become habits.

  • Honesty
  • Exceed Expectations
  • Urgency / Importance
  • Emotional Equity
  • Uncompromising Individual Service
  • Freedom / Liberty
  • Anonymous Service
  • Diligence
  • Goodness
  • Self Control
  • What's Right vs. Who's Right
  • The Right Thing / Doing It Right
  • Financial Independence
  • Pro-Active
  • Selflessness
  •  Involvement / Commitment
  • Justness
  • Problems / Opportunities
  • Kindness
  • Appropriateness
  • Understanding
  • Patience / Deferred Gratification
  • Respect
These, among other principles will become our constitution and will govern all our decisions pertaining to all our policies, practices and procedures.  Every decision must always be principle based.  Everything else may change but these good principles will never change.  They are our lighthouse.  Any time one of these principles is violated or questioned demonstrates a lack of understanding.  When they are truly understood, they are not arguable and should always be practiced.  There is the obvious superficial understanding of all these.  But, when we fully understand the deeper hidden truths beneath the surface it's like removing gravity and breathing in pure oxygen.  It's an indescribable high.

It will probably take years to write the Hair Direct Constitution and put  it into practice.  But after we do, it will be congruent with our automation philosophy.

A good principle based culture is our long term goal.  With the great staff we have been fortunate to attract, this goal is easily achievable.

Have a great hair day.

Hey Bill-  Sounds like great thoughts for anyone in business.  If you don't mind I think I might print this list out and post it above my desk.
