Hello everyone!

Hope spring is treating you fabulously! I know mine has been GREAT so far! Just wanted to take the time to type out a quick recommendation for all of you. I have used a gazillion products on my hair. Some have been awful, some outstanding and some just so-so. Let me tell you, I'm like a hair product bloodhound sniffing out new stuff all of the time. My bathroom closet is so full of product I think I could start an outlet! I'm not going to give you an inventory, you'd be reading for days!!!

Lessons - #5 How to Set Realistic Expectations for your Hairstyle

There are many different hair replacement companies in the world. There are a few companies that have the capability to send you hair that you order online. You choose the haircut, order the hair and in a perfect world**, it arrives at your front door - ready to take out and wear!

Let's talk about how you choose your hairstyle. Wow, have you visited the women's hairstyle gallery at HairDirect? There are so many styles it makes my head hurt trying to choose just one!

One of the most frequent mistakes that women make while ordering their hair is the choice of hairstyle. The hair gallery has lots of pictures of great hairstyles, any one of which would flatter almost any of us! But....be careful! You have to carefully consider more than just what the hairstyle picture looks like on the website.

As an example, let's say that you have ALWAYS dreamt of a full head of long, flowing, bouncy, shiny hair. So, you research the women's hairstyles and decide you want your hair to look like the style in this link:

Well, here's the part where you need to set a realistic goal for your hair. First of all, you need to understand the type of unit you want to order. Is it a frontlace? Is it a full cap or a partial? What kind of hair do you already have to work with?

If you are ordering a full cap, you can have this look. Here's why:

the hair techs can determine the type of hair, the density and the length needed to match this picture
the hair on the unit will cover your entire scalp so there isn't any blending needed

Keep in mind that your new hair isn't a "WIG" or a "LACE FRONT WIG". It will not hold this style on it's own like synthetic wigs do. Although the cut will be great, you will have to use styling methods on your unit, just like you would if it were your very own hair. This particular style probably uses very large rollers under a hot dryer, sprayed lightly and finger brushed to achieve the soft bouncy curls you see. Your unit will not arrive fully styled and ready to wear - but it will be cut so that you can style it just like this!

That's the "easy" scenario.

Now, let's say that you only use a partial unit. Your unit will cover the top of your head only. The back of your natural hair and the sides are thin and you can't wait to put your new hair on! Well, here's the catch! This hairstyle needs the same density and length all over to work. If you have a partial unit made to these specifications and then put it on over what you have naturally....well...then

Need I say more? The hairstyle will not look like the one you chose, because you don't have a match with your natural hair.

So ladies (and gentlemen) I urge you to:

Be very diligent (and set realistic goals) when you choose your hairstyle!

Make certain that it matches what you already have to work with and will blend in great!

Make certain you have the energy (and the right tools) to style your hair to match your expectations!

Me? I go for the simple stuff...a blowdryer and a curling iron.

Now, if only I didn't have to keep covering up that VERY PREMATURE gray hair! Tee hee...

Lessons - #4 How to Stick it on!

Wow, lots of you found the last blog very helpful! I'm really glad that you did. Sometimes, the number of choices is overwhelming and since some of us have already sorted through the "muck" to get the best results, it's just logical for us to save you from some of our disasters!

Continuing on this logical progression, I'll explain the "how to attach" using the winner of the "Sticking it on" post...and why I give this method the best grade!

The winner is a combination of Supertape and HD Hi-Def Glue with a 97% - A. This method can be used on any type of unit. Personally, my favorite base for ease, cleanup and comfort is a full lace base.

Here is the Basic How-To:

1. Apply Supertape -

Temple to temple - all around the sides and back of your unit. From temple to temple, the supertape should be attached all the way to the very edge of the lace and each piece should slightly overlap the next.
Hairline area - apply the supertape approximately 1/4" to 1/3" back from the edge of the lace.
Stabilizers - Place two strips of Supertape (going from front to back) on your unit where the top of your head will be. This helps the lace stay in place with everyday brushing, combing, styling, etc.

2. Apply HD Hi-Def Glue -

Apply a VERY THIN layer of HD Hi-Def Glue along the desired path of your hairline. Be cautious and only apply the glue as low on your forehead as the base will cover once it is in place.
Wait 3 minutes for the first layer of glue to dry to a semi-tacky state.
Then, apply the second VERY THIN layer of HD Hi-Def Glue on top of the first layer.
Allow the 2nd layer to dry to a semi-tacky state.

3. Attachment -

Take the backing off of supertape strips on the front hairline area of your base.
Spray Adjust a Bond onto the scalp and the exposed supertape strips along the hairline
Gently lay the base onto your scalp and line up the "clean edge" of your base with the HD Hi-Def Glue you applied to your scalp. If your base is lace, it will very cleanly adhere to the exposed glue.
Next, gently press the lace with the teeth of a comb into the glue. The comb prevents the hair from being pressed into the glue and flattened.
Hold firmly for two minutes until set
Fold the back of the unit up toward the front of your head (like a reverse flap) in order to remove the backing from the stabilizer strips of Supertape.
Lay the exposed supertape stabilizers onto your scalp and press firmly to set.
Remove the backing from ONE piece of supertape from the left temple and press into place.
Remove the backing from ONE piece of supertape from the right temple and press into place.
Alternate between sides, exposing one piece at a time and pressing it into place.
When you "meet" at the last piece in the back, you are all finished!

This method is by far the easiest (and most undetectable) attachment and the easiest cleanup I have found. Since many gentlemen feel that the supertape is just a little thick for the front hairline, but they love the hold - this is a GREAT solution! You not only get the extended (and VERY SECURE) hold of the supertape, but you also have the benefit of the undetectable front hairline that the glue gives!

As if that isn't great enough...since you only use about 1/4" of the HD Hi-Def Glue, you only have a teeny bit of glue cleanup! I'll tell you how I do that in another blog very soon!

Lessons - #3 Sticking it on!

So, you want to know more about this "sticky" topic? If I started typing everything I know about glues, tapes, clips and sprays, you would be reading this blog for the next decade! In order to spare you the agony - I'm going to start with what I have found to be the best attachment methods. First - the disclaimer - these work for many people. They may not be the best for you. The only way you will find out what works for you is through experience. This is definitely part of the "learning curve" you read about so often.

So, let's start with the basics...first we need a "unit" - don't ask me why they are called that, it makes me giggle every time! I'm going to use a full lace base for this example. I have compiled a table that lists (and grades) what I believe are the top five methods of attachment for a full lace base. The criteria used for this table was extensive and it can certainly be shared. If you are curious about how each score was calculated, just comment and I will try my best to answer your questions!

Life - #2 In Sunny California!

Hello Everyone!

Hey - Where is the sun out here? I thought California was full of sunshine? Hopefully, the forecast is better for today since I have only seen the sights through a rainy windshield up to this point! What I can tell you is that it sure is BEAUTIFUL here. Our trip started in Philadelphia and we flew 6 hours into L.A.X. arriving yesterday morning! We drove down the Pacific Coast Highway and it was just stunning! Even with the rain and wind, we stopped at almost every scenic pullover we could. There were lots of surfers and we spied on them from the top of the cliffs. It's hard to believe they can build so many houses in such precarious places....but believe me, they can fit more in for the money. Of course, with the current market, there were more "For Sale" signs than I have seen anywhere in the country to date.

So, today I'm in the "famous" Orange County staying in a hotel in Newport Beach, California. The balcony looks right out to the ocean over a golf course...Hmmm...can anyone see me turning green with envy for the people who live here? Later today, I'm heading into Anaheim where I will be staying until Thursday morning.

Lessons - #2 Are You Proud Of Your Hair Company?

Good Morning!

Last night I stayed up late and was flipping through the television channels. A new program called, "The Moment Of Truth" started. The premise of the show is that the contestants are strapped to a lie detector and asked a series of very tough questions in front of their friends, family members and of course the entire audience watching from home. If they answer 21 questions without telling a lie, they win $500,000.00. (Someone please sign me up for that one!)

One of the contestants last night was a 46 year old man named George Ortuzar. As he entered the studio and sat in the contestant chair, I turned to my three teenage daughters and said, "That man is wearing hair." The reactions were entertaining...

"Mom, no he isn't!"
"No way is his hair fake!"
"You just think because you wear hair that everyone does."
"OK, you think you're right mom? How can you tell?"
"I'll bet you TEN BUCKS his hair is his own growing hair!"

Well, I'm usually not a gambler, but if I see a clear opportunity to make money with little risk, I'll take it! We shook on the deal and continued watching the program.

The perfectly straight hairline, the oddly full temple area, the glint of glue through the hair and perhaps even the way the hair appeared to be matted with glue in the front were all dead giveaways for me.

Well, one of the first six questions he had to answer was:

"Are you a member of Hair Club for men?"

He didn't lie and neither did his hair! "Yes," was his answer and it was true.

It's just another shining (literally) example of why I am so happy to have found Hair Direct. I'm proud of the product, I'm proud of the company, I'm proud of the staff members and I'm proud to tell people all about it. Does anyone have George's phone number?

As I sidenote, I sure hated taking that ten dollars from my daughter....tee hee hee ...evil grin!!! Maybe I can buy pizza for dinner tonight!

LIFE - #1 F.E.A.R.

Good Morning! After a nice holiday break and some technical difficulties, it's nice to be with you again! My musings today are about fear. Usually, when I'm afraid of something, I avoid it at any cost. I come by it honestly - my mom is the same way. One of her biggest fears is taking her car through the inspection lanes for registration. Now, as I'm sure all of you know, that is NO BIG DEAL. You drive through an inspection lane, give the attendant your registration card, turn on your blinkers, headlights, windshield wipers, honk the horn, say thank you....and drive away. For some unknown reason, mom panics every time and just won't take her car in. My sister and I take turns doing it for her every couple of years. Silly, right?

Well, when I think of it, I was full of fear when I stumbled on this very website. You know what I'm talking about don't you?

"What if they are lying and are just going to keep my money?"
"What if I can't do it myself?"
"What if it doesn't look as good in reality?"
"What if it's nasty hair?"
"What if someone finds out?"

I won't go on, we all go through it and some stay paralyzed by that FEAR. Unable to act, they stay trapped in that state forever wondering...."What if?"

Here is a little tip I learned from my grandmother. It's an acronym you must remember forever after you read it here. Are you ready?

F = FALSE

E = EXPECTATIONS

A = APPEARING

R = REAL

Almost every fear I have now, I analyze it using this acronym. Let's use my mom as an example. She's scared of registering her car - actually terrified. To her, it's debilitating. To us? It's just a necessary duty we check off the list for the day. Her expectations are false because as we all know, there is nothing to be afraid of! No big, bad wolf lurkes behind the door in the inspection lanes! So her fear is just that - a false expectation appearing real.

Those of us who overcame our fear of wearing hair are here to tell you that maybe you are suffering from the same predicament.

I can safely say that it was scary for me to start wearing hair, but that fear wasn't real. I used too much energy conjuring up every possible disaster I could imagine. All that fear for and waiting for nothing.

What are you afraid of? It may not be wearing hair, ordering hair, or even car inspections....but whatever it is, I'd be willing to bet that if you see your fear as a:

FALSE EXPECTATION APPEARING REAL

that F.E.A.R. just may disappear......

During my break, I had a lot of thoughts about how to make it easier for you all to find the information you need at any given time. I decided to break down my blog posts and title them according to their categories. What I have come up with so far are the following categories:

The Lessons category will be numbered and titled to help you find the subject you are interested in (and to save others from reading what they already know)! Just like my blog yesterday was titled, Lessons - #1 For new and prospective wearers of hair... The Lessons category will teach you about wearing hair.

The "Life" category will share some stories about my personal life. Sometimes it will relate to wearing hair and sometimes it won't...but it will always be entertaining!

The "Random Thoughts" category will be titled specifically and will contain ideas, experiments, results and tips for you.

The "Recommendations" category is obvious. This is where I will recommend (or recommend avoiding) different products for you to help!

Lastly, the "Off Topic Musings" category will be where I put everything else I can think of that has nothing to do with hair at all....is there ever a topic that has nothing to do with hair?

Lessons - #1 For All New (or prospective) Wearers of Hair

As a very experienced wearer of hair (over 20 years), I have some thoughts to share with anyone who is a prospective wearer or a newbie. Experienced wearers have already trudged through the starting gates with our hair and there are some very important details that you need to know about our journey. We try to help as much as we can through messages, blogs, webcams and phone calls, but there are some insights that we sometimes rush past because we are busy answering your starter questions about density, attachment, front hairlines, bases, etc.

I'll give you an example - let's say you are a prospective wearer and you are researching this website. You will find both positive and negative comments about the base, hair, bonding, etc. So you research more to try to find out exactly how you can learn enough from us to protect you from all mistakes. Maybe you know just what I'm talking about. You write down each tip you find to help you with your order, you save cleaning and reattach tips to your "favorites list"...

Well, guess what? We can't protect you from everything. Sure wish we could, but we can't. The process of wearing hair is (as my grandmother would say) "baptism by fire". Today, that phrase is an expression used when someone does something "the hard way" for the first time, particularly if training is necessarily insufficient to fully prepare one for the experience (as is the case with wearing hair). Learning how to order, attach, wear, remove and clean your hair takes a lot of effort. It's work and there is no magic wand that anyone can wave to "make it all better".

Wearing hair is not the solution for everyone. You must be willing to learn as much as you can through research, you must have reasonable expectations and then, you must master the art all by yourself through practice and experience. It doesn't happen overnight. If you don't think wearing hair is right for you, it's not. On the other hand, if you are like me and are willing to do what it takes to achieve your goal, then, get started.

Even after all of these years of wearing hair, there are still mistakes I make myself, mistakes that show up at my door, mistakes are made at the factory or mistakes made at Hair Direct. We are all humans working with other humans. There will always be room for improvement, but we will NEVER get perfection. Count on it.

I'm not immune to the reality of human error! A recent order of mine showed up with the hairs all being knotted in very straight lines instead of being placed randomly. I didn't throw myself under a train. Instead, I called in and reported it. The factory was trying out a new process. They aren't doing it anymore. End of that story.

Another order was late due to language barrier and misunderstanding. I was offered a replacement, but I simply made my current hair work as long as I could until the order showed up. Not the end of the world. End of that story.

The great orders have far outweighed the mistakes. I don't expect every order to show up the same. I remember that I'm human and I'm relying on other humans. There will never be perfection every time. There's no need to direct the blame in a particular direction, it's simply the reality of life. I just chalk it up to reality and continue to look forward to the next little HD box!

You ask, how can she be so positive? What if a knot or two shows in her next unit? Or the hair isn't just right? What if the color is slightly off? Will she be positive then???

OH YEAH!!!! You bet I will still be positive. After all, finally having great hair certainly beats the alternative. You all know the alternative and trust me, it isn't a pretty picture!

The morning grass was kissed with the warmth of the sunshine. Dew sparkled like tiny diamonds and reflected on Snow White's glass casket. Everyone stood around her, mourning her absence and silently wishing for her return. Then, one brave prince stepped forward and lightly kissed her rosy lips.....

Cough...sputter...gasp....

After what seems like an eternity of silence,

SHE'S BACK!

Ok, well, it may not be my story, but it sounded good anyway!

What has been amazing to me is that with every experience I've had over the past several weeks, most of it really relates to what we go through as wearers of hair. I'll pull it all together for you over the next few weeks. It's quite intriguing and really makes you take a hard look at how you choose to react to the process of choosing, ordering and wearing hair.

Before we start on that topic, I thought you may want to know what has kept me from my keyboard for so long! So, the reader's digest version is:

I married "my guy", took a honeymoon, sold my house during our vacation, sold his house the second week, found a house the third week, moved out of my house and into his house on the fourth week, nursed my daughter back to good health after a head injury through the fifth week and are now preparing for our next move in 11 days...

YIKES! It makes my head spin just thinking about it.

But I have been "off the hair track" for tooooooo long! So, let's get back down to the roots...well, so to speak!

First, thanks to all of you for the private emails and calls! I tried to answer as many as I could. If you didn't get a personal response, please know that your notes and calls were all so appreciated and thoughtful!

You will all be happy to know that my hair has been great through all of this and I am excited to give you all of the reports during the next few blogs.

My new jewelry!

Hello to everyone!

It has been a little while since my last post here and hopefully I am forgiven! The month has gone past at a dizzying rate of speed and I can't believe all that has happened lately. As you know, my house has been for sale and now it has been sold! A second buyer offered a contract and since my guys house is right around the corner? We sold his that very day too! Well, with both homes sold, we needed to move pretty quickly...little did I know how quickly!

Two Saturdays ago, he invited me to dinner. When we pulled up, I was very happy to see that it was one of my favorite restaurants. As a matter of fact, it is where we had our first date seven years ago! We had a quiet table in the corner and a bottle of champagne was delivered to our table. As we ordered, all of the staff members were smiling and kept looking at us....hmmm... After a very romantic toast, he pulled out a beautiful little box and....

He asked me to marry him! Of course my answer was an enthusiastic, "YES!"

When we returned home, there were six dozen beautiful roses all throughout the house...One dozen for each of us and each of the children! What a special surprise the entire evening was!

So, now it's official! I have an incredible fiance!!! However, I'm afraid that it's going to be very shortlived....

Tee hee....because this Saturday, September 22nd, at 10:00 in the morning, we are going to be married! Now you know why my month has been so incredibly hectic! I sure wish you could all be here, but you definitely will be with me in thought! I'll be sure to post some pics as soon as I can. In the meantime, perhaps you could all share a toast with me on my special day!

Phillies Game

Saturday night we were lucky enough to go to the Phillies/Braves game! Wow, what a great night! The stadium was sold out and we were in the tenth row on the third baseline! Unfortunately, the Phillies lost. But - it was a great game and a lot of silly fun. The hot dog and funnel cakes made me realize I should be more choosy about my food!!! But I felt like a teenager and we giggled, screamed, yelled and cheered until the bitter end.

It's been quite a season for the guys so far! I'd love to see it get even better! Here is a pic from Saturday's game. My daughters also had a fabulous time!

Vacation's Over!

Wow. It's hard to believe there were actually 24 hours in each day during this vacation. I didn't want to blink for fear that I would miss something!

Thanks to the internet, the world has become a much smaller place. It seems that everyone uses that cliche and for me, it rings very true. This vacation was a different experience for me in many ways. The tickets were booked online with an agency I had never used called Baltimore Travel Center.

It is thru Apple Vacations and the site offers last minute (usually 60 days or less) travel options for a much lower price. We decided on a trip to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. It was very adventurous since we didn't even know the name of the resort until we arrived in Punta Cana! We were promised a five star resort and it was definitely every bit of what was promised!

Every day was over 90 degrees and if I wasn't on an excursion, I was either in the pool cavorting around with water aerobics or I was out in the ocean being "dunked" and tossed into the waves! I was a bit tentative the first day since I had no idea how my hair would react to a tropical vacation, but after all, I had tested it off a high dive, a tennis match, a basketball game and an 80 mph convertible ride...this couldn't be much different, right?

The answer is, right!

After seven full days during which I swam with dolphins, rode horseback, did the merengue until the wee hours of the morning, swam in salt water, rode in a speed boat, relaxed on a catamaran, hand fed monkeys, danced on the beach, layed in the sun (don't ask about my tan lines!), played tropical princess at night...tee hee giggle giggle... and showered at least twice a day,the results are in!

My hair NEVER TANGLED, never lifted, always looked natural, performed like natural hair and never once gave me ANY worry! There was not one time during this entire vacation that I treated it any differently than I would have treated my natural growing hair. I was absolutely stunned and thankful that I didn't have to make any adjustments or change any plans as a result of "wearing hair"!

I will post pictures on HairDirect to let you see first hand some of the results! Gosh, even after swimming in salt water...I just brushed it out, tossed some gel in and kept going with my "messy hair" natural look! I can't believe that I've been given the gift of not having to worry about my hair anymore.

After the vacation, I think I need a vacation! Some of the sights I experienced during this trip were very difficult to process. The country is very poor and it is a stark contrast to life within the gates of the resort. We are so very fortunate to have the opportunities we are presented with. The average income in Punta Cana is $200.00 per month. I promise to write more about the experience when I have time, but tonight, as I sit here writing this blog for my friends who I've missed, I must admit that Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz summed it up best when she said, "There's no place like home!"

Pick a style...any style!

How in the world are we supposed to choose a hairstyle? Sheesh! There are thousands of hairstyles out there and let's face it, most of them look good on someone, but it doesn't mean those styles will look good on us! Like many of us, my hairstyle hasn't changed much over the past several years. Truth be told, I was very happy with it until my daughters recently told me they would like to cut their hair.

If you have seen the pictures of my daughter's hair that are posted on Hairdirect.com, you will understand how a request for a haircut made me shake in my shoes! Their hair is gorgeous! Cut it??? How could they be so unkind to me? After all, I'm the mom and I have to buy my hair!!! Tee hee!

The fact remains - they need (and want) a haircut. UGH!

Since there aren't many chances to get a haircut right, we started with magazines.

"I like this one!"- "Mom, that's the one I wanted!"- "I like that one, but with straight hair"

It all boiled down to one question.

"What will that haircut look like on me?"

Can anyone answer that question? No. It's impossible. The models may look fabulous in the cut that is in their picture, but if you put some of those styles on me, I would look like last years feather duster! So, my research began. Where can I "try on" a hairstyle before I watch my precious hair falling to the floor as it is being cut?
